Vong Duern Villa
Top spot on the beach

What we say:
Located on the southern end of Ao Wong Duen, Vong Duern Villa is one of the best accommodation options on Ko Samet. The stylish whitewashed bungalows are set around a starkly landscaped garden of white orchids and fuchsia bougainvillea. The simple white furnishings are contemporary and hip, and give the modestly-sized rooms a relaxed beach atmosphere. Beds are comfortable, and have fresh white linen, while outside are large balconies. Friendly young staff are a big plus as is the chilled restaurant, which looks out over the occasionally crashing surf. Vong Duern Villa absorbed the similarly hip Talebure Bed and Bar property some time ago.

Nice location - oridinary bungalow
Vong Duern Villa's location at the southern end of the bay is great - most bungalows have tree-filtered sea views as does the really nice (second) rockside restaurant. The grounds are casually landscaped and pretty attractive. But I was underwhelmed by our bungalow, a Standard Rockside job at 1200 baht website, immediately dropped to 1000 when we were less than impressed on inspection (we were walk-in). The place was small. The bathroom didn't have a door, just a shower curtain and big air gaps in the upper wall so you had to be on good olfactory and auditory terms with your travel-partner. The aircon was noisy and dripped cold water on the floor, the bed was very hard - ditto pillows. Breakfast was not included. The ceiling had strips of paint peeling off, and the woodwork showed signs of termite trails. The mosquitoes were fierce, but after we taped the gaps around the windows and plugged drainage holes in the bathroom, things improved. Note his bungalow was much smaller, less attractive and well finished than the ''rockside standards'' on the website as were the half dozen adjacent jobs. On the plus side our room had a nice verandah with drying rails, aircon, hot water, a bathroom big enough so that the shower didn't soak everything else, fresh towels, water and toiletries daily, and a TV. It was clean. The resort has nicer more exxy bungalows in its 3 areas - Rockside, Cliffside and Beachside. Some are family sized. Note no beachside bungalows actually front the sand which was taken by the slightly tatty beachfront restaurant and reception, a massage area, a new paved performance area and a snacks/drink cafe region. Food quality and prices in the 2 restaurants were about average budget/flashpacker standard and there are plenty of competitive options nearby.

Good place
Four of us stayed in delux room for 1800B/night. The room was clean and nice, though not enough furniture. Only two double beds and a small table. Good location on the slope with a beautiful view of the sea. We did not like the restaurant: slow service, overpriced food. But there were a lot of other nice restaurants on the beach.

Ok place,pity about the service
The bungalows are nice, albeit a bit expensive for what you get but that seems to be the way things are going on Samet these days. However, the previous poster was probably being too kind about the restaraunt staff-had our worst meal in Thailand here so be warned. No one here was particularly friendly, they really need to do some work on their service.
