Mac Garden
Clean and simple

What we say:
Head and shoulders above any of the local competition, this is the most pleasant place to stay in the middle of town. The garden vibe is somewhat dented by the large concrete block of a restaurant to the front, but to the rear a collection of standard rooms come with everything you'd look for. Superior rooms are bungalows with dark wood-panelled walls. The split-level bathroom is stylish and comparable with any of the top-end resorts over on Samet. There is also ample parking.

Non-existent customer service
After depositing half a night's stay into the proprietor's account - and confirming the reservation and late arrival time the day before - my wife and I were extremely disappointed to get the run-around from the staff. By the way, my wife is Thai, so there is no question of language being an issue. After giving us directions to walk the opposite way from the bus stations compared with where they're located, the man from the hotel said he would meet us at the Tesco-Lotus with a pair of motorcycles to pick us up... 10 minutes later we arrived, and he was not there. We called back and woke him up; he said he had already waited for us - are we sure we're at the Tesco-Lotus in Ban Phe? Yes. Five minutes later he arrived alone (no 2nd motorcycle). My wife did not like the idea of splitting up, so she told him we would follow. He gave us directions - 200 m, look for the sign, turn right - and then drove off, never to be seen again. We tried to find the sign but after walking for 400m gave up and stayed at the Diamond. Mac Garden has refused to refund our deposit. Ugh.
