Buddy House
Remote location

What we say:
With a national park behind it, Buddy House is in a quiet, remote spot and owned by the manager of the Grand View in White Sands Beach, Mr Pook, whose English is impeccable. Catching a fresh breeze from the mountains at night, in the still air at dusk thousands of mosquitoes circle hungrily, so take your repellent. Bungalows come in a couple of different styles. Balconied wooden and bamboo huts on stilts at the rear, (higher up the mountain at the back of the property) have basic facilities, more modern concrete buildings sit at the front with air-con, Thai cable TV and hot shower. A cooking area is provided so that guests can cater for themselves, with particular emphasis placed on Muslim-friendly facilities. They also supply tents and rent motorbikes, which you'll need to get to anywhere interesting. Plans for the future include improving existing bungalows and building more air-con ones. And while they intend to encourage package tours, this is the kind of place that is more likely to appeal to independent travellers looking for a quiet place to hang out.

Mr. Pook is a legend!
On my first trip over to Thailand as a solo traveler I retreated to Koh Chang. Like many first timers and me having just turned 21yrs old, Bangkok can be quite overwhelming. When I arrived on Koh Chang I was dropped of at White Sand beach and pretty much walked the whole strip to find every resort booked out. By chance i was pointed to Buddy House. Buddy House wasn't next to the beach, but was located in a nice tropical surrounding. I also had the pleasure of being the guest of Mr. Pook. I spent 10 days at Buddy House and at the time there were a few other people who were returning visitors to Buddy house and they told me of the great hospitality they received from Mr Pook and they always would come back and stay with him. Mr. Pook speaks fluent english, he told me one night when we were sitting in the dining area that he had spent some time in England when he was younger. Within 10 days he had sorted me out to be pro- back packer in Thailand. I was taught basic thai for haggling and greeting and also telling touts to go away. He would introduce me to all the guests and make sure we all went on group outings to the waterfall and the beach and bars around the island, also he put on a bbq for us which ever night we wanted one. When the rest of the guests left to go back to the mainland, I was the only one left at Buddy house but Mr.Pook went out of his way to make sure I was having a good time. He hooked me up with a scooter so I spent a lot of the time driving around the island and sometimes I would be out late drinking and when I arrived back at 3 am he would wake up and greet me and ask me how my night had been. On some occasions he would pull out some whisky and offer me a drink. When I woke up he would ask me if i was hungry and whip me up some thai rice porridge, show me how to flavour it and never asked for any money even when I offered to pay for it he refused to accept. MR.POOK is a legend! I have returned to Thailand a few more times, but regrettably I never have made it back to Koh Chang. Needless to say, without my Thailand 101 course from MR.Pook, I would still be getting ripped off everywhere I go. And as i said before.. you may not be right next to a beach but you have a lovely man that will make sure you have the best time possible. I would recommend this Buddy House to anyone! Go spend some time with the best Host Thailand has to offer!
