Mac Resort Koh Chang
Attractive, contemporary beachside resort

What we say:
An attractive and compact resort, particularly in comparison with its neighbour, Koh Chang Lagoon, Mac Resort has clean, well looked after rooms with all the usual amenities: air-con, fridge, minibar, phone and satellite TV -- although the walls are a little bare and could do with some artwork. All rooms are arranged around a sparkling beachside swimming pool with distinctive chequered tiles. Non-guests can also use the pool for 150B. The deluxe rooms have their own Jacuzzi with circular sea view window, other rooms have balconies overlooking the infinity edged pool, and the bathrooms have been done with extremely classy ceramics There's also TVs and DVD players and computers with internet access. Worthy of note, Mac has arguably the best of the beachside seafood barbeques at night. Not only are the table staff efficient, the food seems to be fresher in appearance and also more reasonably priced than some of the other places. There are extensions going on which are due to be completed 2009.

Decent choice
This is a pretty good mid-range option on the beach. The beach is just okay - there are very few beaches on Koh Chang that have good swimming and this is one of them, although the water is not as clean as Samet, and nothing close to what you can find down south. The first night they put us in their standard room. Some advice: spend the extra baht and get a better room. Their standard rooms are horrible. The room they put us in had a view of the water heater and that was it. Not only that, but we could hear the music thumping from next door all night. Bathroom was also quite small. The next day we upgraded to a nicer room looking out onto the pool - 1800 baht a night in the low season but they discounted to 1600. Nice room, tastefully decorated with a good view. The beds at this resort are comfortable but the sheet only comes halfway down, so you're left with half the sheet and half the top blanket covering you which makes no sense. Also there is no wifi - in fact there is no internet at all at the resort. We didn't try the breakfast, however the prices for dinner are more expensive than a few of the restaurants around. We ate at Cookies which is next door - they seem to have the cheapest options for food. The pool is okay but loaded with kids - just average size. They kick everyone out at 6 pm because they want to clean it - I've no idea why they can't wait until 8 or 9pm like the other resorts. Overall it's pretty average - they could spend more attention to small details and make it fantastic.

Awesome resort - terrible staff
Oh dear. Mac resort is easily the nicest resort all along white sand beach. The rooms are immaculate and comfortable, the pool area is beautiful (many people stop off just to hang out around it) and the beach area in front is never too crowded to sit out on. However, the staff in the restaurant (who also occasionally spend time at the front desk, i.e. it's unmanned most of the time) treat customers like an inconvenience, the western food is passable but the thai food is below average, all is far overpriced compared to neighbouring restaurants/resorts, especially considering their habit of overcharging (after the fifth time in two days, we stopped eating there), the night-time beach barbecue was well below par, and despite the fact there's only ever 10 customers there, it's a mission to get the staff's attention. My mother also made the mistake of getting a massage on our first day - the ladies hounded her leaving and coming back to her room for the next week! Such a pity though, it really is an ideal resort in an ideal setting, with a change of staff it would be an across the board ten out of ten.
