Panviman Resort Koh Chang

Beautiful, but a little over the top

What we say: 4 stars

The exterior of Panviman is a little ostentatious -- the dramatic angular roof's reaching into the sky look almost palatial, certainly very Asian. Inside, rooms are gorgeous but with perhaps a few too many extra touches like scattered petals and napkin flowers everywhere. Large rooms have a four-poster bed, seating area, desk and all amenities. The bathroom is astounding, tiled entirely in black with a pebble dash to simulate the beach. A huge bathtub is filled with petals, while aromatic oils burn. A waterfall runs down the pebble wall, and there's two showers, one standard, the other an open roof number. Other facilities include a spa, massage, sauna, swimming pool and restaurant by the beach; the pool is huge and has an awesome rock pool Jacuzzi, very authentic. A bonus point is gained for the separate recycled and non-recycled rubbish bins. One drawback is the location; whilst the hotel sits on prime beachfront land and is great for sand and sea, it's a little far from other places to eat and drink, and the nearest shops are at VJ Plaza, Chai Chet, which is quite far away. A bicycle or scooter would help with this, or alternatively a passion for walking. An ideal spot for honeymooners, not so good for families. Discounts available if you stay longer than a week, though we got the vibe you could haggle over a 3 day stay also.
