Makathanee Resort
Convenient and classy retreat

What we say:
One of the latest additions to Ko Maak, this resort opened Christmas 2006 and has been full ever since. The classic bungalows are typical Thai in appearance but contain all the mod cons including air-con, hot water and television. Being literally metres from the beach guests are treated to an awesome view whether from their veranda or the nearby restaurant, which whilst a little slow delivers excellent food at a competitive price. There are motorbikes and kayaks for rent, and the resort even have their own private pier and speed boats to charter you to the mainland. Although at present there are eight bungalows it seems only a matter of time before they expand. All rates include a full breakfast.

stay here
We arrived on Ko Maak at the beginning of October, and most of the places were in hibernation pending the 1 November high season kick off. This place was operating as per usual, probably because of the custom it attracts. There is now a hotel wing at the back of the property where upmarket rooms are available at the same price as the bungalows. We ended up paying 1500 baht a night for a bungalow and it was superb value for money. The resort is well maintained, the bungalow was a pleasure to stay in, and the staff reminded you of days of old in Thailand. The only complaint was the hardness of the mattress, but we could apply that comment throughout SEAsia. The restaurant was price competitive and could not be beaten for location. The weather was pretty ordinary when we were there, but we ended up staying 3 days extra because of this resort. If you can afford it I would give it a try.
