As you ascend the hill from the Lonely Beach direction, Bailan Bay Resort is the first place you come to on the right-hand side, with a roadside restaurant that affords tremendous views to the west.
Descend the long concrete stairway and you'll reach a peaceful patch of seaside greenery with charming white cottages scattered onto the shady hillside. A private peninsula shoots off to the north, and wooden lounge platforms dot the coastline in front of the accommodation. Though the cottages are starting to show their age, they've held onto a simplified charm that's magnified by the abundant birdsong, butterflies and quietude. Firm mattresses are covered in soft cotton linens and placed on raised wood platforms. Aside from a small desk and basic hot water bathroom, the rooms have only a few large windows draped in sun-faded cotton curtains and great wood terraces out front. The restaurant serves good food too -- and you'd better eat well as you'll need some energy to make it up those stairs. Rates have not increased since 2006, and at time of writing, Bailan Bay offers exceptional value.
