Nestled at the very end of the road through Jek Bae, the Karang Bayview is a long-running bungalow operation in what is arguably the most spectacular location on Ko Chang.
In front of a coconut tree grove that feels a world away from anything, a string of ageing thatched bamboo bungalows are stilted over a lawn that tapers into the resort's private white sand beach. Sheltered by peninsulas on either side, it's an idyllic location with kayaks and a wooden pier that shoots out over the water. Arriving here feels like invading on the mostly return guests' own little secret. Though minimal English is spoken, the staff was welcoming once we roused them from their late morning nap. The huts are bare bones: hard mattresses on the floor, mosquito nets, fans and squat toilets in the cold water bathrooms. We noticed several holes in the weathered bamboo walls. This is certainly not the lap of luxury, but it's great to see old school beach bungalows persisting in such a beautiful setting. A small restaurant does Thai and Western staples.
