Pantawee Hotel
Options galore

What we say:
There is a lot more to this hotel than what meets the eye from the street. Out behind the main building are several buildings with a huge range of rooms. All are spotlessly clean and have free internet connections in the form of a desktop computer and WiFi. Across the street are a few bungalow-style rooms which look very new (though the point of a bungalow on a city street is a bit lost on us.) On the first floor is a popular 24-hour restaurant with a somewhat expensive but very diverse menu. Aside from its self-proclaimed world class restaurant, Pantawee also offers a pool, spa, massage, bar and beer garden and they’re probably planning on building a shopping mall and opera house so you never have to leave the premises. If you don't want to stay in a guesthouse, and have a bit of cash to splash on higher quality digs, this must certainly be one of -- if not the -- best options in town.

central location
as all the other places in Nong Khai seem to be either small or (too) big, Pantawee seems to be the perfect choice in any respect, price, location, 'farang' vibe. Double room including breakfast 900 Baht. (booking online only possible with money transfer.)

good restaurant, basic accommodation
I initially wanted to stay at Mutmee but unfortunately it was full. I stayed here for a couple of nights before hopping on the train to Bangkok. It was a budget hotel, and the room was decent, with TV and even a computer. The washroom is expected for its price range. Don't expect too much as this hotel appears to be rather old, the air-conditioning unit is pre-historic, but the room is reasonably functional. The restaurant was good, but down the road along the main street is the best street food I have ever had. As the Thai's papaya salad is indigenous to the northern region, it was particularly interesting to be here and try it first hand, together with sticky rice and barbecued meat. Do try the wonton noodles and the other stalls. Food is fantastic and the hotel's location allows easy access to this wonderful area. The thing that put me off was that after some time, I realized that the hotel was patronized largely by old white men and their female Thai partners. It was a little unsettling being the only Asian guy staying there with my girlfriend as I saw many of these couples hanging around the area near my room. If you can overlook this issue, the hotel is actually quite a decent place to stay. I live for food and Pantawee Hotel's location is fantastic for accessing really good street fare.

Very Good Restaurant
If you want a change of Asian food then the Pantawee is the place to enjoy your Western needs & they do the best Hamburger with fries in Town also try the Steak. The chefs were trained in Bangkok at the Hilton Hotel, well thats what we were told by the reception staff. The rooms are OK and they do vary alot in size & rates, so view the Rooms 1st & check room rate - 450 Baht to 900 Baht & you can bargin with the manager. The staff are very polite & helpful.

Odd!
The wall of our room was entirely covered in laminated adverts for every service in the hotel! I'm sure the services are great but was a strange choice of decor and not great for relaxing! We only stayed one night instead of the two we originally planned -- we moved to a guest house which was cheaper and had much more character. The Pantawee is a little soul-less.
