Hotel Petchkasem Grand
In need of a little TLC

What we say:
Located just off Jitrbamrung Road, almost directly opposite the bus station entrance, the Petchkasem looks like it was the shining star of Surin -- in 1985 when it was built. Unfortunately, it seems that nothing has been renovated since the Cold War either. The standard room we checked out smelled like cigarette smoke and had well worn olive green wall-to-wall carpeting and similarly cheap and crusty furniture. The fridge and air-con are obviously as old as the building, but on the bright side, the TV looked to be from the mid 1990s. The bathroom had considerable grot in the shower and the doorknob was broken. The hotel's open lobby area just smells old, and the pool in the back didn't appear to be much better off. Buffet breakfast is complimentary, but compared to Maneerote, Petchkasem has a long way to go if it's going to justify the rates, especially considering it's similarly archaic WiFi policy -- 20 baht per hour -- ouch!

Old and aged in the 1980's
I stayed at and recommend the Maneerote Hotel. I checked this one out and even at 450B (excluding breakfast), the office carpeted, aged air-con room is overpriced at half this price. I assume the hotel was build in the 1970's and hasn't seen any investment since. The swimming pool is small and not so clean. Not to be recommended.
