Libra Guesthouse
A rabbit warren of average rooms

What we say:
Long-time established Libra has grown up into a rabbit warren of guesthouse buildings glued together with small but attractive garden areas. Many quite newly built, rooms are fairly standard for budget accommodation; clean and with a range in size and comfort level of amenities. Libra is one of those guesthouses with a reputation for rooms suddenly being unavailable for people who are not taking advantage of their trekking, cooking classes or other booking services.

Great place
We stayed at Libra Guesthouse about a week towards end of February. Found it a really great place with friendly and helpful owners. Went for their 3 day trekk close to Burma which I can also really recommend. Brought our kids (12,12 and 9) on the Trekk and they also enjoyed visiting the small villages with all the dogs, pigs etc. However I would say that 9 Y is probably minimum age as there are quite long walks and it is necessary to reach the villages before it gets dark. Also got a lot of help with booking train tickets and our kids had great fun the owners kids. Resturang is maybe not the best one, but there are plenty of others in the quarters around the hotel.

Currently staying here
I arrived late last night at Libra Guesthouse, and have not yet had any of the negative experiences of other posters. I was asked how long I planned to stay, and if I wanted to go trekking. I told them I just wanted to chill for a day or two before deciding anything, and they completely respected my wishes. My room is spotless, although the AC isnt as strong as I would like. The kitchen closes early (7pm) but thats not a problem as there are heaps of alternatives nearby. The only negative thing I have to say about this place is that there is 8am construction nearby, something that is making me seriously consider moving elsewhere as I plan to be in CM for at least a week.

Nothing Special
The Travelfish Review is spot on. As soon as we arrived at Libra House after a long overland trip, we wwere given the hard sell to join one of their treks. Even though we were quite interested in doing a trek at some point, the manager of the guesthouse had all but signed us up despite our refusals. After refusing to go on the trek we were all but invisibale to the manager and her staff. Speaking of which, there's an extremely annoying foreign blond woman who's working there at the time of writing. She's adopted the supercillious attitude of the staff and treats the foreign guests as if they're petulent children. However, she doesn't speak Thai - I do. She should try to understand that if you're going to fool yourself enough that you think that you can ever 'go native' at least learn the language. You'll find that the staff there are as rude about you as they are about their guests. I guess most foreigners are unaware of quite how rude Thai people can be - or at least have become as they've grown weary of catering tourists. I've noticed a huge change in the last 20 years in living and working here on and off. But this doesn't excuse the dire levels of customer service at Libra House (or at least for those who don't sign up for the trek!). Aside from the bad attitude at this place, in terms of accomodation this place is reasonable. Basic and clean. There's no lounge area to hang out in, though, which really is a must for any decent backpacker guesthouse. Food again reasonable - but this is Chiang Mai - don't bother eating at your guesthouse, there's great places everyhwere. The prices displayed here are way off. We paid 300bt for double fan room. We left after a couple of days and found significantly better accomodation elsewhere for a similar price, and minus the attitude.

Best guesthouse in town!
We stayed at Libra guest house for 5 days and it was a great experience. The rooms are fairly cheap compared to the ones around and it is very clean. Staff is very friendly and personable. Always ready to help and give you good advice. It is a family owned guest house and they make you feel like you are part of it. Don't believe any bad comments you could read on this website. The staff is definitely CARING. I myself got sick (from heat stroke) and they offered me tea to help me get better, even after the kitchen had closed. They organise their own tours but are always wiling to help you organise your own. We did not try their trekking tours, but they were still very nice and friendly to us. Not pushy at all!!! They will always be honest with you and even help you avoiding the tourist traps. When we come back to Chiang Mai we will not hesitate to stay at Libra Guest House again. We had a wonderful experience!

Great! Guest House
This was the most recent of 6 stays at Libra. Each time I return they say ''welcome home'' and that is how it feels. They are welcoming, warm, helpful and available. I have never taken a tour or class from them and they have always found a room, even when I didn't let them know I was coming. The rooms are spotless and the atmosphere is charming--about as unrabbit warrenish as you can get. Not sure where that description came from, but I encourage you to take another look. I will and do recommend the Libra to all my friends!

Absolutely Terrible
I have never felt the need to write about my experiences on such a website, that is until - I stayed at the Libra Guest House. I only planned on staying one night, as the bed was rock hard, sheets were dirty and the staff seemed rude. Unfortunately I got very sick, (food poisoning) and had to stay two more additional nights. After I got sick the staff were absolutely uncaring and cold, treated me as if I were a pest and offered virtually no help. They even started arguing with me (when I was barely able to stand up) about additional fees that I had to incur if I wanted to switch into a room with a hot shower (even though I had told the staff earlier I wanted to do this). Thankfully a traveller managed to bring me some food and drinks as I was completely immobile. It is clear that these people are 100% money driven. When I was leaving, the staff didn't even say goodbye, or thank you. Aside from the staff's complete lack of integrity and compassion, the guest house itself was not very nice - there are MUCH nicer places to stay in Chiang Mai for the same price.

No pressure, Great guesthouse, fantastic trekking
Have stayed here several times over the past few months - undoubtedly one of the best guesthouses in Thailand. I did 2, 3 and even a 4 day trek with them but was never pressured at all... staff give honest friendly advice and everyone else I met there said the same thing. Rooms are fine, food is great and the staff superb. Highly recommended.

Great!
Great guesthouse! Stayed for a week and did their two-day trekking tour (though I did not feel pressured into doing it). Trekking was great and rooms were clean and cheap. Any time again!

Time to change your description Travelfish
Hey Travelfish - your description of this place is way off the mark. I've been here for 3 months now and have watched the staff go out of their way to make their customers happy... The above comments all say the same thing - there is no pressure from them at all... Do you guys actually read what people write or stick to what you may have heard? Seriously, good businesses should not have to suffer from misinformed independant travel sites. Libra is absolutely brilliant and deserves to be recognised as such.

A Chiang Mai favourite
Have stayed here twice now. They are very helpful with arranging onward travel, even if you plan on booking nothing through them. Staff very friendly and willing to sit and chat. I got sick here last year for a week and they never once tried to kick me out. Free WiFi is available, the food extremely cheap (40B noodles, 20B shakes) and it's in a great location. HIGHLY recommended.

Highly Recommend!
We had a great experience at Libra House. We did book a one-day trek with them, but I did not get the feeling that there was any pressure on us to do so (we stayed there five days and made our own arrangements on all but one). When my husband got sick on the trip, the staff members regularly stopped by his room to express concern and offer toast and coke. This is truly a home-away-from-home. The rooms are clean, and they have really cute gardens, which adds to the atmosphere. Also, the staff were very friendly and professional. They also have a good restaurant (which must be clean -- they offer cooking classes out of it). Libra House is also a great value.

Good rooms, helpful staff
This place is run by practical women with a sense of humour. Good rooms, helpful staff, no pressure, great location. If you run out of toilet paper a woman will yell, "TOILET PAPER!!!! heh heh heh... OK". Watch a meek man hurry out with a supply. Joan and Lorna
