SK House
Many services, attractive buildings

What we say:
This very popular guesthouse has a whole complex of attractive and recently renovated buildings including a restaurant and bar showing movies, internet, travel agency and swimming pool. Rooms are quite pleasant, and have a choice of fan or air-con. Staff are not very friendly or accommodating, unless you're taking advantage of their many services and if you're not trekking with them you may find that the guesthouse is suddenly full. Libra guesthouse next door is much the same if SK is full, with room rates ranging from 150-400B.

Terrible
Came in on the overnight bus from Bangkok and went with lonely planet's recommendation (my bad). SK house is an absolute hole. Rooms are dark, mildewy and dingy. Go across the road the Bow Chiang Mai, much better and cheaper too.

SK 2
I stayed at SK2 9 Phra pookk lao Rd. SOI 13 http://www.skhouse2.com/ for about a week and did a three day trek organised by them. 700B for a double or twin air con room. All the staff were really friendly and informative - they organised all kinds of trips - we went white water rafting, quad biking, flight of the gibbon and to restaurants, markets and trips they recommended. All of these were well run and good value for money. The hotel was clean and well looked after. The pool was small but really nice - very refreshing at the end of a sticky day. I would definitely recommend SK2 to any visitors to Chiang Mai

Good value
Had a great few days in SK,when we arrived at about 6:30am we were allowed to check in, have a shower and breakfast before sorting out our details, which was much appreciated. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the 3 day trek was a highlight of our holiday. There fruit shakes and pancakes made the perfect breakfast before a long days sight seeing.

Nice place
We stayed here after staying in a really crappy place and were amazed by the pool, clean room and smart interiors. Our room overlooked the pool in the main block. The staff were pleasant and we did not have a bad experience with them at all. The tour desk lady was helpful and location around the cute soi's was pleasant. Perhaps because this is a LP recommendation people are overly critical?

Bed bugs
Please be advised that we had to leave the SK House in the middle of the night after discovering that we were being bitten by bed bugs. We turned on the light to find our mattress crawling with them. We explained why we were leaving that night and the clerk told us to come back in the morning. We did, only to find the staff completely unwilling to speak to us about it, or to even go and check out the room to at least see that we had a legitimate claim (they had already rented it out to other people). We tried to warn friends we'd met on our trek about the bed bug situation, and they threatened to call the police. Please protect yourself from the danger of disease-spreading bugs, and a very unsanitary hotel, and do not stay here.

SK - No Way!
Agree with all the other comments. We stayed in the ''new block'' across the street from the main complex. Room was not clean, towels filthy and shower leaked over the bedroom floor due to strange design. Manager Nina and her brother are not to be trusted. We booked a trek with these guys when we tried to get a discount she gave us a lecture on ''no cheating'' and ''everyone pays the same'' emphasising ''no cheating'' for 10 minutes , ok you might say but afterwards we of course find that we paid 300 bhat each more than others on the same trek & they were taking to visit extra places before joining the rest of us! No Cheating indeed! Best avoided at all costs.

Avoid this place
I booked a room for 3 nights via an agent in Bangkok. S.K. house were supposed to wait and pickup at railway station. Well, they did not. When finally arriving to the guesthouse they did not have any available rooms. After waiting 2h I got the key for a room. Must have been the lousiest room they had. Shower hose was leaking and spayed water everywhere! Facet was hanging on the pipes and I was afraid it would fall on my feet at any time. The room was also next door to the owners private rooms. They were extremely loud until 2am on a regular weekday. No towels or toilet paper were provided so I had to demand this from the reception (the people were really lazy&rude and just seemed annoyed by being disturbed when doing nothing behind the desk). Do not be fooled by fancy brochures about this place, AVOID them! These people should not be running a guesthouse business since they obviously do not care the least about their paying guests. They charged 350B per night for a fan (noisy) room.

Not a good experience
I've got to agree with the others. The rooms in this place are waaay too run down for the prices. I also had two guidebooks stolen. I asked two of the girls at the desk to look after by stuff on the table while I ran back up to my room to change. They happily agreed. When I came back less than 10 minutes later my two guidebooks and a map were gone. All of the sudden they were finding it next to impossible to communicate with me. Imediately left and went to Bow across the street. Cheaper and 10X better. It's too bad, with some effort this place could be good but right now I would avoid it at all costs.

One night was too much
Had to ask for toilet paper, soap and a towel. There was one very thin sheet on the bed which did no good at all to keep me warm at night. There is a computer room but all of the computers were very slow due to a virus (it attached itself to my memory card and my laptop detected it). After one night I couldn't leave fast enough.

Never again!
We moved to SK from the much nicer Blue House because SK has a pool. We stayed a few nights, but were slowly put off by the dirtiness of the place - there were puppies around which did their business anywhere, and the final straw was when a live cockroach fell from the air con unit into our bed one morning. Not nice at all.
