Eagle House 2
Grimy rooms but a good traveller centre

What we say:
This is the second branch of the very popular Eagle House. It has a range of rooms, all of which are pretty grungy, though the staff are good and a comfortable and gregarious open air restaurant make up for this. It's got one of the cheapest prices for air-con in the city, but the decor reflects the price. They offer an in-house cooking class on the premises. If you don't book their trekking or cooking classes your room may suddenly be booked by someone who has. Call ahead for a free pick up, although it's best to book in advance as it's often full.

Average
There were no dorm beds at this place. I had a single fan room for 200 baht. It was a bit of a grimy room, and the bathroom smelt pretty bad. Pretty average place. I didn't book anything through them or do the cooking thing so I can't comment on that.

additional comment
Oh, just wanted to add that hot water is free here too and the room was really quiet up on the second floor.

Chilli pepper cooking school
The rooms are basic, but big and with air con are cheap and basically just what we needed. The hostel is central too. The real highlight was the cooking course we did today with a small group of four. Taught by a Thai guy with excellent English and an extremely funny personality, it lasted 6 hours and we got to cook 5 dishes - a choice from over 30 dishes and also were given a free full color recipe book to take home. I would recommend the cooking course here even if you don't stay. We saw a cooking course by the market whilst we were buying our ingredients...there must have been more than 10 people in her group.

Spooky and leary
I called from the airport for a room and everything is ok..When I get there I can only stay for 2 days unless I book for a trip and there will be room for you when you come back. The room was ok, clean, a bit molldy but there's hardly anybody around and dark yet they say that there is no room available. They also make you wait although they are very polite.

Dingy and over priced
OK, so nothing major was wrong but the room was just pretty dingy and dank smelling. The staff were hard to find (I waited 30mins to find someone to answer some questions I had about trekking) and when they were around were not that helpful. The garden is pretty small (mostly just car park) so the only good thing we found was that they refill drinking water bottles. Would only recommend as a last choice.

Slightly Rustic
This was also our experiment in frugality and it eventually beat us and reminded us not to be too cheap. Rooms are grotty and uncomfortable, staff were friendly and the trek organised from here was great. 290THB and you really do get what you pay for.

Don't stay here
We stayed for 2 nights at Eagle House 2 before we moved to another guesthouse. Our room cost us 290B for a double room with air-con. The air-con was falling apart and our door was falling off. Rooms are very noisy and there is no hot water in the shower. There are far better guesthouses in Chiang Mai.

Dirty
The staff at Eagle House 2 were kind and helpful but knew very little. Could not even give basic information about buses for example. The place was not clean. Bird droppings on table cloths, etc. The owners claim to be there but I never saw either one of them.

Very basic
Was pretty cheap (240B) but we got what we paid for. Not very clean, not very comfortable. Moved after one night. To be fair, this was an experiment in frugality for us, and the place might be fine for someone on a limited budget. But was too far down-market for us.
