Description
This lovely little guesthouse has clean basic rooms set in a private, relaxing garden. The staff are reportedly friendly and deservedly bring back stacks of return customers, although we have had reports of frostiness; it seems that if you're staying a while you are welcomed, but don't expect any special service if you're just passing through. Reservations are recommended as they are often full, particularly in high season. Not far from the Night Market. You have to pay extra for toilet paper and to rent towels.

OK room, no service -
By cecilia2 ( total comments: 2  More information please ) Stayed here 10/2007
The room was clean when I went. Had a nice country-ish wooden furniture, and seemed like the walls got a new coat of paint from past reviews. The drain in the bathroom did clog up easily and the management seems to have addressed it by just putting up a sign on the wall to tell the guests to make sure that the drain holes are open when bathing.
The Thai woman who was there during the day didn’t understand English and seemed annoyed when I asked her (for) anything. The western woman who was there in the evening didn’t know anything and was condescending. Forget about getting even very basic information about the town (or about the guesthouse itself!). Seemed like the owner was not putting any effort into running the guesthouse and the guests were a nuisance.
Yeah, it’s cheap, and it’s in a convenient location, but the Nam Khong across the street is the same price. One good thing about Sarah’s is that it’s so quiet because there are no other guests there!

Don't stay here -

This place is over rated. The rooms are very overpriced, small and not that clean. There are lots of much better places in Chiang Mai.

Decent. -

The staff here were actually quite friendly to us, and so was Sarah. The rooms were good for the price -- two beds for US$6.50 a night... can't ask for too much. Unfortunately, every time we took a shower the entire bathroom flooded, so we had to be quick. I don't really understand the concept of paying for your toilet paper, but maybe that's common in Thailand's guesthouses. This was the only guesthouse we stayed in that didn't provide toilet paper in the bathrooms, but it was available for purchase at the front desk, along with bath towels. In general I recommend bringing those mini-tissue packs with you everywhere in this country. Also, their on-line trek booking tool is useless, as they don't reserve anything for you until you've come in person.

Gone downhill? -

My experience was so different than the one described here that I wonder if something has changed. The staff were competent, but very unwelcoming and unfriendly. The room was clean, but very shabby, poorly lit, curtains falling down, and with a truly terrible, worn out foam mattresses. Great location, but I was happy to leave this place.

Nice place but frosty owner and lack of services -

Sarah Guesthouse is a nice spot in a good location but the staff leave quite a lot to be desired. One of our friends wanted to leave a bag and she was totally ignored. I'm glad that we didn't need any information about Chiang Mai or trekking as the staff were never around.

Terrible -

We stayed for five days. I forgave Sarah her chilly reception, the overpriced rooms, and the feeling she and her husband were put upon every time we had breakfast. I couldn't condone her giving one days notice on being booked. We'd told her we planned to stay for a week when we checked in, and she made no mention of being full then. We ended up checking in at the excellent Baan Jong Come just across the road, and really liked it there. Particularly as a contrast to Sarah's.

Confused my reservation -

I wouldn't recommend this place at all. It nearly ruined my time in Chang Mai. The staff are unfriendly and the rooms grotty. I had also booked a trek way in advance through the internet and when I arrived they looked at me blankly and then I to rearrange all my plans and go another day. I moved out asap... highly recommend Bow across from SK hostel - luxury, clean and TV for the same price...

Relaxing -

Lovely place, clean and spacious rooms, a decent menu and good trekking. Over our four-day stay we didn't really experience the friendly staff though.

We thought it was really welcoming -

My partner and I stayed at Sarah Guesthouse earlier in Feb 2004 and liked it a lot. The house is in a little garden off the main roads in Chiang Mai, so it is quiet, particularly in the evening. Also we found this to be a very good place to meet other travellers; we met the people we ended up trekking with (in Mae Hong Son though, not Chaing Mai) at Sarah Guesthouse. I'd recommend it. Don't expect five star luxury, this is more like relaxing at a friend's house.

Chiang Mai Thai House
5/1 Tapae Soi 5, Chiang Mai
The Chiang Mai Thai House opened in mid 2005 and represents outstanding flashpacker value. While it is more of a hotel than a guesthouse, the rooms and bathrooms are immaculate and we mean immaculate. Warm water showers, comfortable beds and a choice of fan or air-con give a range of options for... more

Pagoda Inn
49 Chang Moi Rd, Chiang Mai
Pagoda Inn's distinctive terracotta-painted buildings surround peaceful gardens with ponds flowing through them. Rooms are all different, and quite elegantly decorated for a low-budget guesthouse. Sri Pat Guesthouse

Bow Chiang Mai House
15 Soi 9 Moon Muang Road

Lai Thai Guest House
111/4-5 Kotchasan Rd
The Lai Thai Guest House is a very popular spot with travellers and tour groups alike, but their rooms have not aged well. Regina Restaurant and Guest house
69-73 Chareonrat Rd, Chiang Mai
Set behind a house that is over 100 years old and packed with a huge array of knick knacks for sale, the rooms here are a little on the dark and dank side, but the very pleasant riverside setting more than compensates. This location is very handy for the bars and restaurants along the Ping River... more
