Mae Chaem Hotel

Most popular spot in town

What we say: 4 stars

A small resort-style hotel with wooden chalets set in a garden, the Mae Chaem, while having most definitely seen better times, is still a reasonable option -- don’t forget, you are somewhat in the middle of nowhere. There is a very dingy two-storey block giving onto the carpark, which houses what passes for reception and which does mask your view of the chalets and garden on arrival. The block and its rooms are dilapidated and dank, but ignore them and head to the chalets out back.

The wooden chalets are kind of oversized A-frames really, but spacious enough inside with cable TV, WiFi, attached bathroom and hot shower. While we did spot a few cobwebs in corners and failed to spot any decoration, it’s perfectly adequate for a night’s sleep and a good deal at 400 baht. They’re fan-cooled only, but in these parts that’s sufficient for everything outside of the hottest months of the year. There are also some newer two-room chalets in the garden suitable for families and which come with balconies and air-con.

They even have a fair-sized swimming pool and a (basic) gym as well as a restaurant and bar. Service is friendly, albeit with limited English. The menu and information is in English though, so they do make an effort to cater to the Western tourist trade, unlike some of the larger Thai country resorts found in remoter areas such as this. A simple breakfast is included.

Massage is also on offer (which you may well need if you’ve just ridden all the way from Khun Yuam, and if you’re lucky staff may be able to arrange boat trips on the nearby Mae Chaem river. The hotel is found at the entrance to the town on the road in from Khun Yuam down a small lane before you reach the town centre. Awesome view of Doi Inthanon too, so even if you're just passing through it's worth stopping for a late afternoon drink. Note that this hotel is popular so it can get pretty full.
