Areeya Phuree Resort

Secondhand feel, discounts galore

What we say: 3 stars

This somewhat eclectic resort is at the end of a long soi south of the bridge, and we got the feel early on that it was bought somewhat recently and rebranded by the current owner, and rather lazily so — the signs on doors and buildings still had the previous resort's name on them. Even so, Areeya Phuree does offer a rather high volume of rooms in varied sizes, and it seems whatever low cost the new owner has put into refurbishing the place has translated into savings for the customer. Indeed, given the size and quality of the rooms, the prices we were quoted seemed low – almost too low. The owner was handing out discounts as if they were going out of style, so much so in fact that is was impossible to ascertain how much he actually charges for any given room. Discounts aside, the resort is actually fairly attractive, apart from the vile-looking swimming pool in the centre of the complex, which looked as if it had not been cared for since the mid 90s. The rooms we saw were really quite pleasant, so while we would not advise staying here sight unseen, it does seem like the type of place where a budget traveller may be able to find a very good deal, especially in low season. If money is tight, or you have a big group, stop by and see what you're quoted — couldn't hurt.
