Bamboo Riverside Guesthouse
Family-run, with fantastic homemade bread

What we say:
On the main road which runs through Chiang Khong, parallel to the Mekong River, the Bamboo Riverside is a favourite among budget travellers. And rightly so, while the restaurant and sitting area are looking a little tired and overgrown at the moment, the food, particularly the Mexican food, gets rave reviews. Three standards of rooms are offered. The dormitory is the cheapest option but is only open during high season. It has the best view over the Mekong and is situated under the restaurant. Toilets are next door and the hot showers are a wee walk away. There are bungalow rooms with shared hot shower bathrooms and also bungalows with private hot shower bathrooms. The rooms are small, a little dark and a bit musty but clean. Rooms all have bottom sheets, mosquito nets and fans. The main reason to stay here is the restaurant, which serves amazing homemade wholewheat bread, tortillas and other tourist fare. Prices are reasonable, the views over the Mekong are great and the boards covered in information give plenty of reading while you wait for your meal to arrive.

Now called Siam Guesthouse
Ah the green! I too was in search for the Bamboo Guesthouse only to notice a dingy sign below Siam Guesthouse stating ''Old Bamboo'' It is 10min. walk from the immigration post. The bungalows seem to have been fixed up a bit and decorated in lime green decor right down to the towels. The resturant serves great food and the bungalows, which are set in a beautiful garden along the Mekong make for a great atmosphere. The rooms are tiny and can sqeeze two people and backpacks only. The shower and bathroom are descent, but also tiny. And the walls are paper thin so if you have active neighbors you can here pretty much everything. Is a good stoping point for a night. Payed 300 THB for room with private bath.

Bamboo Update
It is true that the guesthouse, in its unique jungle setting, is, in fact, closed. However, the owners, Jib and Dhao, are not retired; they run the best resturant(I love Mexican and their bread)in town! They told me that they will open a new guesthouse soon. Try the Suphaporn Guesthouse next door. I enjoyed my stay there (8 of 10).

So sad, Jip was awesome
My best buddy and I stayed 2 nights at Jip's place (in our 13 day crazy trip his was the only place we did two nights as he was really so fun and friendly). He's an old hippie who still dresses like one, and introduced us to his wife Diao and daughter Ah (if I remember correctly). They didn't really speak much English and mainly kept to themselves, smiling sweetly when approached. Jip was fond of music and jammed on the guitar half drunk one night with us, reminiscing on old and hard times, sharing with us his past life working and slogging away in Bangkok (before packing everything up and starting that place). The place itself was really warm, laid-back and cozy, though a little run down, and the food wasn't too bad at all. Best of all was the view of the Mekong - to die for! You could laze away in a hammock and watch the world gently float by. And in the mornings you can jog along the pavement which lines the great river. On the second night Jip invited us to watch him jam with his buddies at some bar nearby. He really was in his element. Got loads of priceless photos. I wish him and the family well.

Owners Doubtless Retired
When we stayed at the Bamboo Riverside in 2006, Jib and Dao -- the owners -- told us that in a couple of years, they intended to sell the place and retire to the country. Sounds like they did just that. They'll be missed. (I did no numerical ratings below, since it seems to be moot.)

Changed name
We searched for ever in the heat for this place and eventually discovered that the owner has sold up and moved on. I don't think it is operating anymore.

Great Atmosphere
This is the kind of place that will make you not rush across the border to Laos. A great place before or after the transition across the river. Some of the best Mexican food you will eat (really)!
