Mae Hong Son Guesthouse of Chiang Rai
A sleepy family run option

What we say:
This very long-running guesthouse has a great homely feel and a small but very pleasant garden area to relax in. Run by Mod and Tom, a Thai/Karen couple, Mae Hong Son Guesthouse of Chiang Rai draws a steady stream of repeat customers, and sitting around in the garden common area it is easy to see why. The accommodation is in a two-storey house, and while some of the rooms could do with a little work, this is overall a fine choice if you're after basic and cheap accommodation -- the rooms are pretty clean and the showers are incredibly hot. Sitting in the garden having breakfast as the birds sing above is a great way to start the day. The guesthouse offers its own tours, from one-day trips out to the local hills or comprehensive three-day day treks. Western and Thai food is available.

The worst overpriced of Thailand!
Even it's out of town, the garden and quietness of the place is inspiring... Now about the room I had, I can confirm it's the worst and overpriced I ever had in Thailand! I had fan double room with private hot water bathroom #8, facing the bar/reception for 250b A very tiny room with a quite large rock hard bed, the hardest bed I ever had! The room did not look clean, some dirt traces mainly on the floor. Bathroom was not inspiring either, I had to ask for it as there was no towel. And no furniture at all! I had to open my bag and keep everything on the floor where there was already no space! January is fresh at night and the head of the bed side window cannot be closed, there is only an anti theft steel barrier, mosquito net and curtains on it. The blanquet wath not thick at all and hopefully I was alone so I could fold it in the way I had 3 layers + my own travel blanquet (+ T-shirt + pullover), still freezing... Even I was tired (which makes me lazy and tolerant) after the night I spent there, I did run away to Mae Kok Villa which for 10b more gives me the best room I ever had in Thailand.

great family run place
I stayed here for about 4 nights. It's true it's a bit further from the center than other places, but it's a simple walk, no big deal really. I got the cheapest 150B room with fan and shared bathroom. The room was in a lanna style house, small but nicely decorated and cozy. My bed was good but two different guests that stayed in the room just in front complained about theirs - it the very first room to the right. There's a guide who works with them and is always around. At first he's always asking what are your plans, but after he sees you're not interested in tours - which was my case -, he's cool with it, don't be too defensive trying too avoid him. But the best thing here was the family who owns the place, specially the brother and sister. They lived just in front and when I was there they had just finished their new house, literally next to the GH. They had a house warming party with friends and family and they invited me and 3 other guest that were there - we were the only ones I think. We all hang out together, ate real local food, drank of beer with ice and laughed trying to communicate. Oh yes, breakfast was good too.
