North West Guesthouse
Good option for a tight budget

What we say:
This guesthouse has very cheap rooms that are basic but not grungy. Small clean rooms have clean white sheets, windows, a fan, and share bathrooms that are decent and clean, with a hot shower. There is one air-con room upstairs and one downstairs that are decent value. There's also a restaurant on-site which serves standard Thai fare all day. North West rent out motorbikes for 150 to 200B per day. Plenty of trekking information is available plus motorbikes for 200 baht per day, mountain bikes for 100 baht and regular bicycles for 50 baht. Their restaurant area has internet plus internet connection for laptops. A friendly spot -- rust a shame it is not on the river.

Great Location, Helpful Staff, Tranquil Atmosphere
I loved Mae Sariang, and North West Guesthouse was a big part of that. My friends and I did book ahead, and unfortunately there was only one room available. The room went to my friends, and I was hoping to find something once I got in to town, which was going to be no easy feat, as our bus wasn't due to arrive until around 1 am However, to my delight, when we arrived at the guesthouse from the bus station, we found 2 sets of keys left out for us: one for my friends' room, and one for a room at the guesthouse down the street, which they had very kindly taken the time to book for me in advance. Luckily, a room opened up the following night and I was able to join my friends and the very helpful staff over at NWG. Despite what has been mentioned in a previous post, our stay was nothing but peaceful and relaxing; the downstairs area of the guesthouse closed up fairly early, and we had absolutely no noise complaints to speak of, even from the bar across the street, which by the way is a fantastic place with great food and drinks on the riverside. The food and drinks at the NWG itself were excellent as well (though a little pricey by Thai standards) and the staff spoke excellent English and were very kind. The rooms were everything a tired traveler needs, and completely affordable, especially when splitting the room between two people. I can't wait to go back to Mae Sariang, and NWG will certainly be where I will be resting my head at night.

Updated Review
May 2011 Sadly to say my updated review is negative, negative and more negative. The owner Tukta has decided to neglect the guesthouse (we don't make much money from the guesthouse) and promote her restaurant (average food) to locals who like to drink late into the night. I've stayed here five times and always found the accommodation and standards matching the 200 baht per night (shared bathroom) rates and the restaurant closed dead on 11pm. In Thailand I just expect a clean, quite room with access to a hot water shower. I don't mind if the tourist information is minimal or questions are only half or partially answered. Unfortunately on each of the first two nights (12:30am & 1am) I had to go downstarirs and ask the owner to keep the noise down. On the second night her boyfriend was 'entertaining' his friends who were very drunk. The noise did cease each time but it's either a guesthouse or a late night restaurant. Please be careful if you're not an experienced motorbike rider as both her machines are dangerous. There is a new rental shop on the way to the bus station (brand new Honda 110cc and 200baht per day). I ordered breakfast from her menu which naturally listed the prices. When I went to pay ''they're old menus and old prices, the price of pork is now expensive''. She did 'discount' to the listed price. At night bad cover versions (seems to be only 2cds) are played too loudly and the chill out zone is monopolised by her boyfriend or NGO long stay guests watching TV. We spent are nights across the road at Sawadee (see below). Maesariang is still a beautiful town and the locals very friendly and polite. Sadly on my next visit I need to find a new home away from home. The restaurant opposite called Sawadee has extremely good food (on rice) and the owner friendly, polite and very funny. Normally I avoid tourist restaurants but not this one, right beside the river.

simple, clean. cheap and great hosts
The rooms are basic but clean and have everything needed including mosquito nets and towels. The hosts are great - very friendly, welcoming and laid back, with heaps of English for non-Thai speakers and lots of good help and information about things to see and do, without being pushy. There is also a good little riverside restaurant just across the road. I would stay here again without a doubt. I did not need to book beforehand.

Nice, clean and cheap
It stayed across the street at Riverside Guesthouse the first night in Mae Sariang and NWG is a much better value. The bathrooms are cleaner, service is better, and the rooms are bigger and nicer - all for 150 THB. It's not overlooking the river, but you'll be more comfortable. Bike rentals are 50 THB/day!
