Description
Smack bang in the centre of town, this well-established backpacker haunt has a couple of restaurants to its name, a tour agency, and a range of very basic but cheap room options. Mentioned in most guide books, Duang is often full so get in early -- being across the road from the bus station, it's also easy to find. Most rooms share bathroom facilities, which are clean but dank. Sleeping accommodation consists of small dark bungalows, or teensy bare wooden rooms. Larger bungalows out the back are more expensive, being a little lighter, more pleasant, and with bathrooms inside. The saving grace is the restaurant, which serves world class fruit shakes for only 20B! The food is ok, a touch expensive, but they do have a comprehensive menu of Thai and western classics.

We stayed in a fan room, shared bathroom and it was 150B not as stated above. The double room with attached bathroom was 200B. Our room was really cool, you had to climb up a step ladder to reach it. It was very old, but very authentic. Clean enough but no towels provided. The only downside about staying in Pai town is the horrendous howling from the dogs at night. Anyone would think they turn into werewolfs the racket they make! Duang is very friendly and can arrange treks but no pressurising if you didn't take them. Didn't eat in the restaurant.

Mr Jan's Guesthouse
68/6 Tesaban Rd, Pai
Signs everywhere in this large garden proclaim the health-giving properties of Mr Jan's herbs. There is a widely-promoted herbal sauna, one of the main selling points of the guesthouse, which at the time of our visit wasn't working, and apparently is somewhat unreliable. They offer massage and a... more
