Charlie's House
Another popular longtimer

What we say:
Being one of the oldest and best known guesthouses in town, renowned Charlie's is another guesthouse that's seen better times but remains very popular. It does have a very central location, if that's what you're after, and some of the cheapest rooms in Pai. The bottom range shared bathroom options can be a fair way from said bathrooms, so this isn't the place to stay with a dodgy stomach. The top of the range Romantic House seems a bit out of place, since if you wanted to spend 600B you'd be better off staying at a plusher resort with better facilities. The ones in between are a better deal. Prices stay the same year round and staff are efficient and friendly. Often full during high season.

Ok for the price
I stayed here for one night and paid 150B for a concrete room with 2 single beds. It wasn't pretty and the shared facilities weren't the best, but it is centrally located within Pai and I found it comfortable and quiet - so certainly ok for a night or two.

More good than bad
I stayed here in low season and got a huge double with AC, hot water, and TV for 500b. So space is great. Location is great. Price is great. As for the Bad, rooms are not pretty to look at from either the inside or out. They are clean enough for me, but I'm a 23 year old guy, and my girlfriend hated it. The staff seemed very aloof and lazy. A pipe was missing in the girl's room so water from the sink faucet went right from the basin onto your feet. Very disgusting when brushing teeth! When we tried to explain this, they couldnt understand either my english or my broken Thai. We felt like a nuisance. My room was cool, no missing pipes or anything. TV was very wierd. Channels came and went on their own: what was Discovery Channel yesterday may turn into aljezeara the next. Charlies is also right across the street from a small general store with a fine selection of pre-funking liquor! Convenience, size, and price are the key selling points here. Not romantic. Not warm and friendly. I would probably stay again, but check the pipes before paying!

Good, but can be loud
I stayed here during high season and got a room for 150B - cheap! Rooms aren't exciting, but clean and spacious and the shared bathrooms were clean and actually had hot water (not the lukewarm water that passes for hot in most guesthouses). Now the bad news. Because it is centrally located a block from the bus station and pretty much right in the middle of town, within easy stumbling distance from the bars, lots of loud young party kids stay here. Still a good deal, though. Bring ear plugs.
