Standard basic bamboo huts
Over the Pai River
Mae Hong Son Province
Tel: (089) 951 9693, (087) 172 7682

Description
Across a perilous bamboo bridge over the River Pai, Family Hut is one of a few basic bamboo-hut guesthouses which are very popular with backpackers although not particularly special. A restaurant provides a pleasant chill out area beside the river. Most of their accommodation is a standard structure on stilts, a mattress inside and shared bathroom facilities including hot showers. Larger, more solid bungalows have a private bathroom with hot shower either inside or down below, but these are a little over priced. Staff speak only basic English. A nice touch is the riverside massage shop connected to family hut which provides extremely tranquil services at 200B/hour.

Nothing special, but doable -

When we got to Pai, we just kind of wandered until we found ourselves on the other side of the river, and just grabbed a couple huts here. 200 baht for a double, shared bath with one hot shower and one cold one. My advice is that in Pai, you don't need much (at least if you're not staying too long), because you'll only be at your guesthouse to sleep. The nightlife is very friendly and chill, and you'll just want to be wandering around all day. Plus, you'll never forget the bamboo bridge across the river :).

Baan Tawan Guesthouse
117 Moo 4, Pai
A great garden area, lined with dark teak wood bungalows and a big old teak house, leads down to a quiet riverside sala and lounging area. Accommodation is simple but charming, with a wide choice of bungalow styles and sizes, all with bathrooms with hot showers. Larger bungalows have balconies, the... more

River Park Darling Guesthouse
Near south bank of Pai River, Pai
Newly established, this friendly place is run by the delightful 'Annie', who laughs and chats with her guests, takes them tubing every day, and parties around the campfire by the river at night. Accommodation is generally of a slightly higher standard than the usual riverside bamboo shack (although... more

Pai Lanna
169 Moo 1, Maehee, Pai
Pai Lanna is a pleasant place, with an awesome restaurant which provides killer views over the rice terraces. The rooms, however clean and new as they are, are seriously overpriced. Thatched bamboo used to be the formula for cheap huts; nowadays they call it Lanna style and double the price. The... more

Misty Bungalows
Near the river, Pai
This place has 15 no-nonsense bungalows, all with shared facilities. They're basic A frames, but larger than the 'usual suspects', with a pleasant double door which lets in plenty of ventilation. The rooms are circled around a central sala which has a few hammocks strung up, a good place to relax... more

To My Friends
East of the Pai River, 187 Moo1, Tambon Maehee
To My Friends is run by the likeable Ball and his Japanese girlfriend Moji. Their set-up contains only eight huts, some with en suite bathroom and some shared. The huts are basic bamboo and wood constructions, but there are nice touches in terms of the design, particularly the open air shower and... more
