Bamboo Huts
Top spot!

What we say:
Bamboo Huts is closed but we're leaving this listing here for now just in case something reopens in the area. In the meantime, the NP accommodation seems to be the only option.
This rustic guesthouse has spectacular views over the surrounding mountains and valleys and a lovely little garden. All accommodation is very basic bamboo bungalows with share bathrooms (including arguably the coldest showers in Thailand). Lawa hilltribe guide and owner William is a lovely guy who speaks excellent English, Thai and Lawa. He runs some fabulous treks right from the guesthouse front door. Rates of around 500B per day per person are very reasonable and a number of attractions well worth seeing are included in his itineraries, such as two massive caves and some stunning watershed forest. All meals are set, with servings huge and tasty. Vegetarian food available. The guesthouse is out of mobile range, so you may need to persist if you are trying to reach William on the above number. Highly recommended for a really unique experience.

away from it all
This really is a special place, and very different from the anywhere else I've been to. The rooms are just basic bamboo huts on stilts, each one with a balcony and a spectacular view. I recommend bringing a mosquito net if you're not into sharing your bed with bugs, and a torch (there are only a few weak bulbs up by the huts). Yes, breakfast's not great but the people and the place are just wonderful. Ideal for adventurous trekkers or for those who want to get back to the peace and quiet of nature. Note that the rates are now 150 baht a night now.

Fantastic place
This place really is a gem, with great people in a great location. Rained all night when I was there, but my hut was dry and warm. William wasn't around, so I couldn't hike with him. Only complaint was that Pom dumbed down her food for us farangs (she's a good cook), and since I had stressed time and again that I really wanted local Thai food, it was a big disappointment. Also hard to figure out what hikes to take, so maybe we all need to improve the directions/ suggestions in the guest book, but it was fun to figure it out as I went along.

the crown on our stay in the north
William, his wife Phaw and their two polite lads make you feel at home immediately and the moment you sit in front of your hut you realise why you've taken the effort (and the amazingly beautiful trip) to get there. It's no place for pampered luxury-lovers and it should never become that. In fact, I hope that when (not if) I return there, the shower (mandi) will still be cold. Lovely place, lovely people, lovely scenery, we hated to have to leave it.
