Gateway Hotel
Past its prime, but comfortable

What we say:
Located out near the bus station, the Gateway Hotel is the biggest and most expensive hotel in town. The building and rooms have obviously seen better years, but the prices reflect its decline, as they are substantially lower than they once were. Rooms have air-con, hot water and TV, though the basic rooms are pretty rundown, making the upgrade to a deluxe well worth the extra cash. The hotel has a pool, which would be handy if you don't feel up to doing laps in the lake, along with a restaurant, massage, cafe, disco, karaoke club, and even a snooker table or two. If you're travelling with a big group and want something nicer but can't fit everyone into a smaller spot, Gateway will probably suit your needs; otherwise, it's worth going elsewhere in search of a bit more personality.

Seen better times - but with a view!
We stayed at the Gateway Hotel for two nights. And in general, it was okay. The staff was friendly and a few spoke good English. The room and the bed were quite big on one of the upper floors - nice view! But the whole place has gone way past its good times. Everything looks old and run down - particularly the bathroom - sometimes brown, rusty water came out of the shower ... well, we didn't bother to complain. Since the whole place seemed to be old, we assumed that it would be the same situation in every room. Breakfast was okay, nothing special. The location is okay, also. You can easily walk to the lake and the city center. There are a couple of homestays right at road at the lake. They looked pretty new - next time, we would rather try those than the Gateway.
