A budget traveller's heaven
736 Intharakiri Rd, Mae Sot T: (055) 544 976
Tucked away down a small lane at the western end of Mae Sot is No4 Guest House -- a very long-running institution among budget travellers.
No4 has served as a cheap and cheerful base for the tightest of budgeteers from which to experience this cultural crossroads of a town. The owner, Mr Oom, is a wealth of knowledge on the local area (although you may need to squeeze him a bit) and he also runs local treks to Umphang. The treks however do not reflect the price of the guest house and come in at 5,000B per person for a three day affair -- probably a tad overpriced -- especially considering that the price doesn't decrease if you have a large group. Nevertheless if you're looking for a room to put your head down and aren't worried about super frills, this converted teak home provides four private rooms and one large dorm room which can sleep up to eight -- all with shared facilities which are clean enough. The guest house is plastered with posters and flyers about local activities, and they have bikes for rent.
