Farang Bar
A necessary evil

What we say:
Farang Bar is more of a necessary evil than a guest house. It's near the station for the minivans to Ranong, so it's a cheap, convenient place to stay if you miss the last departure and have to stay overnight. They run a row of flop-house rooms, adequate to the purpose, mostly as a loss leader to get people into the bar/restaurant, which overcharges for everything. You can also get a discount on a room if you just need to crash for a few hours before catching the night boat. Showers are available for 20 THB, even if you're not staying here--towels are provided, just ask. They double as a travel agency, arranging tours and booking boat tickets. The enterprising owner, Mini, speaks English quite well.

Can do better.
The Thai staff are actually very sweet. Rooms are a bit like cells and hot at night, but the showers are OK. The food (Masaman Beef the best) was great, but it was the owner (Ivor?) that left a sour taste in my mouth. Example: when I queried my bill which was in Thai he said ''Well I dont know it is in Thai isnt it??'' Huh? They have wifi, and also I found the food and drink to be expensive compared to other parts of town

Kind of dirty, but cheap
Checked in here late after taking a long bus journey from Bangkok and just needed a place to crash before the ferry at 6am to Ko Tao. The floor is basically the same as outside. The room smells like cat pee. There are suspiciously curly hairs on my pillow and small bugs. The staff seemed friendly enough and the food was delicious. They changed my sheets upon asking but it was pretty gross. It's got a Western owner and it's kind of surprising that these are the standards. BUT it is cheap(150 Baht in high season) and free wifi is enough to keep your mind off the curly hairs.

Farang Bar
We spent the night here as independent bicycle tourists needing a place to sack out before heading to the beach. All things known, we might have gone to another guest house (there were many close to this one) but all in all it was not a negative experience. The folks were nice, they had internet, it was well located for our needs. The room was a dark claustrophobic cell, but hey, it worked for us for one night. Nice spirit house that they take good care of. You don't have to eat at the restaurant, nor did we feel pressured to sign up for any tour. Cheap and cheerful was our experience.
