M.T. Resort
Prices have surged

What we say:
This place used to be known as Mother House Resort--renown for it's small, comfy, 300 THB bungalows. People still show up here looking for them, only trouble is, Mother installed air-con in all the bungalows and now they go for a stiff 900 THB a night! It's a nice enough place to stay: the small bay is secluded and deserted with the bungalows sandwiched between the white sand beach and the wooded hills behind. There is a nice restaurant area on the edge of the beach. The manager, will organise boat trips to nearby islands for snorkelling or fishing, price depends upon number of people and the destination. Enterprising villagers also propose day trips by long tail to islands such as Ko Thong Lang, which is pretty with good coral for around 1,000B. This is also where the catamaran for Ko Tao departs. The songthaews don't go out here anymore, so you'll have to arrange your own transport in town if you want to stay here.

Simply Awful
Chose this as it was next to the ferry terminal. Owner picked us up from train station (400 Baht). Cost us 1350 Baht for a seaview room. Big mistake, as we couldnt see the difference to the garden view. In fact there was no garden, the whole place had been dug up (renovations I guess) and there was just dirt everywhere. Turned to mud when it rained. No discount for the mess. Restaurant food was pretty good and cheap enough. The free all day instant coffee was a good touch. But BED TIME was a disaster. Went to our less than flash beach view room and it was filled with a sewage stench. We complained and got shifted to another room, with the explanation that it happens to that one sometimes. In the next one we found a scorpion living in the bathroom, thankfully the owners father (we think) killed it for us. The only other guests were two Irish girls who, shortly after we went to bed, started screaming at the top of their lungs. Went to see what the matter was and they said their room was overrun with cockroaches, running over their bed and clothing. They were trying to kill them with sandals and deodorant. This went on far into the early hours, all we could hear was scream scream, bang bang, curse curse. Poor girls. We heard this buzzing noise all night from our bedside light, couldnt work it out. At 5am it woke us up, shone the torch on it and an army of wasps was crawling out from behind the light. That was it, we moved out and spent the rest of our stay on the beach. Collared the owner when we saw him, tried to explain about his bug problem, but his English vanished and then so did he. Never saw him again. Tell you what, I'd strongly advise that you should never stay here. Unless you have a backpack full of insect killer and some gumboots. But I suspect even a small tactical nuke wouldnt deal to the cockroaches.
