If you're a night owl
28/1 Moo 2, Ao Nang T: (094) 591 5411, (081) 719 2992
Sharing space with Dream Bar down a side lane off the main drag, Popeye is worth keeping in mind for a budget room that puts you within a three-minute walk of the beach and close to Ao Nang’s nightlife.
Simple rooms are clustered around a roofed open-air hallway, meaning that windows face a wall in most. While basic fan editions in a second building across the lane are suitable for those who just want to flop down on a bed after a night out, the air-con rooms with bright primary coloured walls are thoughtfully kept and quite comfy. They come with TVs, safes, small desks and fridges to go with beds with colourful blankets. Still under 1,000 baht in high season, the top-end corner rooms are bright and spacious, with a large window. Bathrooms are basic Asian wet style with hot water. This place is best suited to backpacker-budget night owls; light sleepers and families should look elsewhere. Rooms are slightly better than at Yellow Sun next door, but that's a comparable option if Popeye is full. Discounts are available for single travellers and long stays.
