Set on a hill overlooking the sea just north of Ao Kantiang, this swish Belgian-owned boutique hotel is an example of a new development done well.
Every last detail seems to have been carefully thought out, but in more creative ways than you might expect. Equipped with all expected extras and then some (in-room espresso machine anyone?), each room has a cool minimalist design that incorporates several wide glass windows, leather lounges with silk cushions, funky works of art and splashes of deep crimson to contrast the flush whites and muted greys. A handful of posh multi-bedroom villas are also available for families or groups with cash to flash. In addition to a spa, tour activities and distinctive red-tiled swimming pool and jacuzzi, The Houben's restaurant is lit by an army of red lanterns and serves local organic rice to accompany a refined Thai-Western menu. The location is a short ride from Ao Kantiang village but feels more isolated. A complex pricing system means that rates fluctuate based on availability and packages, with huge discounts often available online.
