Nestled into the steep hillside that stretches over the rocky north of Ao Mai Pai, the rooms at Bamboo Bay offer great views in a breezy setting.
The restaurant, massage and reception area are placed on a wide wooden deck that stands on stilts over the rocks. Reached by concrete stairs that will give you a workout, rooms come in a few different sizes and styles. All of them are detached bungalows made of wood, bamboo or concrete (or a mix of all three) and spread fairly far apart amid the hillside. It pained us to leave an air-con cottage in a private setting with great views from both the porch and bed -- very romantic indeed. The cheapest fan bungalows are set all the way at the top of the hill and have cold-water showers, but the air-con editions come with hot water and safes. The young man who showed us around was very polite, and he offered pick up from anywhere on Lanta. Add an extra 300 to 600 baht from mid December to mid February.
