Description
For the right kind of traveller, this rag-tag little bungalow operation is exactly where you want to be. They offer inexpensive, rustic bamboo bungalows -- pretty close to nature and bound to be frequented by the eponymous geckos -- just remember, they eat the bugs! That's why they're laughing, maybe. A friendly, laid-back Thai-Canadian couple run the place -- they're the kind of owners that enjoy the company of their guests and are fun to hang out with. Jam sessions are a common occurrence in the evenings, so if you're carrying around something to blow, strum or pound rhythmically, you'll have the opportunity to strut your stuff. Communal dinners are served in the funky common area for a flat rate, and the fare is varied and tasty enough to keep most guests satisfied for the length of their stay. Pretty much just what a bungalow guesthouse should be -- an obligatory stop for backpackers passing through the area. All bungalows except dorms have private baths. A word of warning: the owners don't pay kick backs to local tourist agents, who often try to steer people away from the place in return. Don't believe what you hear -- it's open all year round and yes you do want to go here!

The Travelfish review is pretty well spot on. This place is incredibly welcoming and it's a top spot if you're backpacking and don't mind roughing it. The communal meals are awesome and a great way to meet other travellers. Bungalows are very rustic and not at all sound proof (as indicated by one amorous couple at 2am). Cold shower, squat toilet. Bungalow hardly secure, but they do have a safe. Just down the road from the beach. They organise tours with local connections. All in all, I thoroughly recommend this place if you want to chill out for a few days in friendly, easy going surroundings. The airport shuttle didn't really know the place - it's next door to the Cashew Nut restaurant (assuming they know where that is!) But it's well signposted from the main road about halfway along the beach.

Jinnies Place
101 Moo 3 Ao Nang
A footbridge from the road leads across a small stream to Jinnie's place -- the part that fronts the street is quite attractive, with well-tended gardens and ponds here and there. Out back there's a surprisingly huge pool, but the grounds become a little sparser and suffer from a lack of shade. The... more

This is one of a handful of options right on the beach road, and it's not a bad pick if that's you're top priority. The concrete bungalows are quite well done, cool during the day, and the bathrooms impressively clean. We found the air-con rooms slightly odorous, but otherwise well equipped with... more
The Cashew Nut
96 Moo 3, Nopphara Thara
This very quiet, low-key place is run by a Thai-Muslim family and offers clean, basic bungalows that are a good value for the money. It doesn't have the kind of atmosphere you'll get at the Laughing Gecko down the road, but the accommodation here is quite a bit more comfortable. There's a... more
