Description
The Phi Phi Hotel was badly damaged by the tsunami, but has rebuilt and reopened. The initial effect upon entering is that of a flash, high-class hotel, but on closer inspection -- yikes! The cheaper rooms have no balconies and views of crummy alleys. The more expensive rooms have more amenities and big balconies with terracotta tile floors and great views but have absolutely no tables, chairs, sun-loungers or umbrellas, and are exposed to direct sunlight for most of the day. You could probably roast up some chapatis out there, but what else are you gonna do? They have a small, shabby, mouldy pool on the first floor. The building itself is completely inappropriate for the surroundings -- they recently circumvented local building ordinances forbidding high-rise development and added a fourth floor. The owner wanted to put a big neon sign on the top, too, but they stopped short of allowing that. This place embodies much of what accommodation in general, and accommodation on Ko Phi Phi in particular, should not be.

Clean but crooked - ![]()

My daughter and I recently spent three days on Phi Phi. I had not been there since the month before the tsunami. This is not just a rating of this hotel but a rating of Phi Phi also. First off we were uncertain of the exact date we would be on Phi Phi so were unable to get a room prior to getting there. What we found was really disheartening. Every place we went to said they were full and had no room available. Only to have hawkers on the pier trying to sell you rooms to hotels that said there were full. After several trips to the pier and then back to a couple hotels, what I realized is that the hotels are selling large blocks of rooms to scalpers and then the scalpers are bumping up the price and selling them. We were really without options so we stayed at the Phi Phi hotel and paid the higher prices. Although not happy about the situation. Our room was clean and very nice although the smell of raw sewage came up from the drains in the bathroom and made you want to gag. I wound up having to plug them with wet towels just to make it bearable. The other thing that was bad is that there is a water shortage on Phi Phi (due to the over development I have read) and the pool which looked beautiful was filled with salt water. Other than that the Phi Phi hotel was fine. I would suggest you skip this place if you can help it, (although you may get stuck and be in a bind as we were) as staying here sends a message that what they are doing is OK.

You can see this hotel from the pier as you arrive in Phi Phi, which is a great shame, it should never have been this high. Everywhere seemed full and I just didn't have the energy to ask in any more places. Think we got the last room here. Not a room with a view, but the most comfortable bed ever, but maybe it felt so good because I had previously roughed it a bit. The buffet breakfast was delicious too. Pool is ok, but they need more sun loungers, but who needs a pool when you're here for the fantastic beaches? One complaint, the smell of drains is disgusting! You could do better, but you could do worse.

I booked my seaview room at the Phi Phi Hotel through a third party site and couldn't have been happier when I arrived there. It's a two minute walk to the ferry pier. The tsunami damage was not readily evident in the building itself although it was plain to see all around. The staff was very courteous, and my room was spotlessly clean. The hotel is in a good location for exploring the island. One note - it's a good move to hang your Do Not Disturb sign every night....if you don't you run the risk of housekeeping banging on your door at 8:00 am.

This place was just about wiped out by the tsunami, but it bounced back quickly and has been back to its old self for quite a while now.
