Viking Nature Resort
Jungle vibe

What we say:
Not on Ton Sai Beach itself, sprawling Viking Resort runs across a couple of beaches between Arayaburi and Long Beach and offers a wide range of bungalows, including quite comfortable and solid wooden fan-cooled bungalows, amazing treehouses and multilevel bungalows that are just massive, with each individually decorated within. Rooms in the same price bracket can be quite variable though, and some are a very long walk from the restaurant, so if possible, ask to be shown a few rooms. Some are ideal for families, others for couples looking for something atmospheric and isolated — note though that the closer you get to town, the louder the music at night becomes. Mosquitos are also a major issue here, so pack repellant. They have more than 20 different room types in total with prices mostly in the flashpacker bracket. There's also a popular restaurant on site, but the service can be quite slapdash and tends to the glacial on the speed front. Nevertheless this is a very popular spot and in high season reservations are close to essential.

Upgraded and fair value
I've always like Viking's gorgeous little beach and funky atmospheric restaurant/reception, but in the past I considered it overpriced for a budget joint. These days it has upgraded and expanded and I reckon it is now fair value, particularly when compared to similar places on the laid back east coast. I gotta stress fair value for Phi Phi - that place is seriously more expensive than most. The upgrading is via a bunch of refurbished and new bungalows, some of them very attractive looking chalets on piers way up in the tree crowns. The expansion is largely thru taking over the adjacent Maphrao resort - lotsa upgrading and new bungalows here too. btw that section has its own beach, about 500m west of restaurant/reception beach. It is okay but not as nice as the home beach and suffers the low tide blues to a certain extent. Combining 2 resorts makes for a pretty big establishment - my bungalow up the hill at the far western end of the old Maphrao section was nearly 10 minutes walk from restaurant over sometimes steep paths featuring tree roots etc. On account of the distance management threw in free breakfasts. My least expensive rattan thatch wall standard room was part of a duplex bungalow. It was pretty nice - irregularly shaped, some arty touches, nice firm bed with excellent fitted net (plus window screens), quiet fan with a proper slow speed setting, good lights, nice bathrooom, good veranda with huge hammock. Major complaint - a bit short on storage. I read some reviews complaining of nigh party noise from town. My bungalow was nearly a km closer to town than reception and all I could hear was some distant bass - didn't worry me and I'm a bit touchy about such things. The restaurant was pretty good - food okay and prices not bad. Had free food tasting each night and if you are a cheapskate like me you can hoover up a fair bit of grub that way. I thought the staff okay - some reviews complained of indifferent service but the fact is the backpacker place of the past has changed into flash-packer/lower midrange a bit quicker than some staff members have changed the relaxed approach so common at the former. No problems, things still get done. btw Viking's seemingly isolated beach aint really - rock-hop east to lovely Long Beach in less than 5 minutes below half tide or climb over the steep headland track in under 10. To the west about 20 minutes stroll gets you to town. There was a Viking boat waiting at the pier on arrival.

Resort living on a budget
Bungalow accommodation set on it's own private beach just 2 minutes walk around the head from Long Beach. Resort style without the hand holding services which makes it a much cheaper option for Ko Phi Phi. Food tastings every night. Run by english speakers. Our room wasn't ready on arrival so we were upgraded free of charge to the stunning Macai room which has private bathroom and is incredibly beautifully designed and furnished but much more expensive. Cheaper bungalows have shared bathroom which is a reasonable walk through the forest to the bathroom. Not fun at night. Music from the main town can be heard until very late at night which is disappointing, but not the resorts fault. We paid 1000THB/night for the basic bungalow. Much cheaper than other options.

Not Impressed
Booked this after reading about it on here, against our better judgement. The stories about the rodent poo are true, filthy rooms at high prices, even in low season. We didn't even bother to sty more then the three hours it took to find somewhere else. Avoid.

Bad service, doesn't cost the money!
We have booked the bungalow through an e-mail, then we called them in a day before we arrive, but NOBODY met us on the pier. When we came to the place, we found out that they do not have the bungalow we booked! And the last one with the sea view was very pricy. I agree that there is a challenge to climb up to your bungalow, holding the tree brunches, but it should not cost 3000BT in this case!!! BTW, the beach near the resort is tiny, though clean. After a quick consideration, we passed to the neighbor beach and found wonderful bungalows with balcony and see view even cheaper than one we saw here.

quirky but romantic
along its stretch of beach, viking is really unique. it has way more personality and feels less overdeveloped than its neighbors, even though its sandwiched between other, busier areas. its beach is really pretty. the bungalows are cute - ours was up on stilts overlooking the ocean (awesome view). it kind of feels like luxury camping - there were no glass or screens on the windows, and we had to kind of walk out and around to get to the bathroom (though it was private). the mosquito netting and open-air arrangement is really fun and adventurous-feeling. our only real complaint (other than it being pricey - which everything seemed to be on phi phi) was that it was loud - with long-boats going past and the staff blaring music late into the night, it was tough to sleep. but, if you're a sound sleeper and enjoy feeling like you're in robinson crusoe, this place would be awesome.

not recommendable
We booked ahead through an agent and arranged to be picked up at pier, noone arrived to pick us up. When we called them, the phone was passed around three diffrent people then they hung up. Finally got longtail boat to Long Beach and trekked our way up the rough trail to Viking. Older people, or disabled would find it very difficult if not impossible to get here. Food was pricey. Didnt get room we asked for. Noise from some kind of sewer system very loud and right next to our bungalow. They tried to charge us for food and drinks we never had. A 'waiter' who never even served us swore black and blue that he did. Not cool. Terrible service and difficult location aside, the place does hav somehas some funky furnishings and a private location away from the hustle of Tonsai....

Great place, but...
It's in a great place. I phoned them several days before I arrive (and of course, I phoned them one day before I arrive), yet when I arrive, the manager wouldn't admit my call and the price I got from the telephone. He raises the room price. The whole check-in process upset me. Other staffs are great and friendly. Yet, the spot is great, but again, it's noisy at night with the music from the bars at near beach. They turn off the music at 3:00 AM...

nice place to stay on Phi Phi
VIking is a great spot for hanging on their private beach during the day. Nice friendly staff, Tak the Manager is great. During the night it can be very very loud depending where your room is located, because of the bars and the echo across water: this can be remedied with earplugs. Room 3 is very nice for the price, room 10 is much less so. The restaurant is good there. You will need to take boat taxis everywhere else though and don't be surprised when the price increases at night.

Great Views but...
Stayed here as a kind of end-of-travel splurge for three nights last september. Great place, nice people (true: maybe a bit too laid back sometimes) and most of all wonderful views of the sea and Phi Phi Ley in the background, even from our porch hammock. Too bad all the peace and quiet was sometimes disturbed by loud music played by the Viking staff. Food was a bit pricy, that's true (though breakfast was pretty good), but you can easily walk to town and eat there. In short: a good compromise if you want to be able to reach town on foot without too much hassle but yet still have some idyllic privacy at your accomodation.

Ab-so-lute-ly fantastic
Stayed with my girlfriend for seven or so nights in March. The place is so nice it almost hurts! Very warm and welcoming, helpful, family like staff, greatly decorated bungalows with loads of funny little wood-things dangling in the wind, paintings, sculpture like items, everywhere. The architect of viking has his workplace down at the beach and has a MASSIVE output of fantastic things of all kinds. Exceptionally clean and nicely propped bathrooms (loads of soaps, shampoos, and baths free to use), always hundreds of candles & torches lit all over the place during night-time, snorkel gear and great prices for rental kayaks, excellent snorkel conditions just right at their beach. Beware the STEEP jungle trails leading to some of the bungalows, that's definitely not meant for people who refuse to move on anything that's not a paved walkway. And yes: You hear the longtail boats that travel to and from Long beach all day. Thanks Tom and all staff. Simply perfect!

Excellent place
Stayed for one night and loved it. The private bay is superb, the bungalows are characteristic and comfortable and the food ain't bad either. The bars are a short scenic walk of five minutes via long boat. Hard to contact via phone but I picked up a card with different numbers on them to what is advertised here. Can also just turn up of course.
