Phi Phi Hill Resort
Great views

What we say:
Slowly being marginalised by the neighbouring Phi Phi The Beach resort, Phi Phi Hill was closed for low season when we last wandered through in September 2011 and while there wasn't a single staffer to be found, we assume it is reopening for high season. The old style wooden bungalows at Phi Phi Hill are large and comfortable, some with great views, some with tree-obstructed views. But even if you get stuck in one of the latter, there are really great views also from the hillside restaurant. Both fan-cooled and air-con bungalows are available, scattered over a large grassy property. Located on a steep slope with lots of stairs, it can be a bit of a work out to get around, but luckily they have some sort of funicular contraption to pull your bags up to the top upon arrival! If you book in advance, they'll throw in a free boat ride out there.

Returned after two years
The good - The sunrise side fan bungalows are still good value at 750 baht for first row twin and 700 baht for second row double. The restaurant service had improved, surly non-English speaking boys replaced by surly English speaking girls! The food is reasonable and pretty good. The bad - They ask you to phone the day before to confirm, which is a pain, but I'm glad I did as they had cancelled my booking due to misreading my email! They didn't seem too bothered by this but I had the emails to hand so they then changed their tune and four calls later(!) everything was sorted. Everything was fine after that. They are incompetent, but it is one of the last reasonably priced places to stay on Long Beach. They have spoiled the view somewhat with an big blue roofed semi-completed bar just down from the restaurant. Very ill-conceived. Blue! Long beach was still very nice, but I was disappointed that the big deserted beach down the track behind The Beach Resort was covered in trash.

Beautiful location....horrible staff
I stayed here with my g/f for 4 nights this past Christmas. It is a beautiful location with great sweeping views of long beach and Phi Phi Ley. The rooms are clean and spacious - they don't really get too hot like the bungalows on the beach do during the day, and there's often a cool breeze at night. The food is the cheapest you'll find on the beach - 25% cheaper than every other restaurant we visited on Long Beach. They will pick you up from Tonsai Pier for free (although you have to pay 100 baht each to get back). We had a sunrise room although it didn't have much of a view - 750 baht a night. Don't bother paying twice as much for included breakfast - the food is cheap enough and this is a common rip-off scam. Every other place on Long Beach is at least 1000 baht or more during this time, so this place is a bargain. The problem is this: the staff are awful. At least once a day they got our order wrong in the restaurant or forgot completely. Most of them are sitting around watching Thai soaps all day and don't care about customer service. I live in Thailand, so I am used to this kind of behavior from service staff, but this is the worst I've ever seen. On our last day we bought boat tickets for Phuket, but the staff failed to mention that the boat leaves from Tonsai at 2 pm, not Long Beach, so we missed the boat. I also left my camera in the room, but when we called to claim it, the staff said that they couldn't find it. We are still in talks with the police about this. Because of the incompetent staff who work here, I would recommend people to stay elsewhere.

Don't do it
We booked online and yes the photos looked great. We chose a sunset bungalow with fan and were very disappointed. I was okay walking up the never ending stairs and was impressed with the view but our bungalow was not worth the 1200 bht. It had not been cleaned properly for a long time. Our toilet dripped into a pile of scum underneath the tank. Yuk. The deck of our bungalow is in great need of repair with broken, unsafe boards and I didn't dare sit back on my broken deck chair. Thinking I was paying extra for a sunset view was a joke. If I stood on my tiptoes and lead over the porch I got a slight view. We moved out the next day into town and for 100 more enjoyed our stay at the Andaman. Oh and by the way a 30 min. walk into town.

Great diappointment
We stayed in a double fan bedroom with an extra ''bed''(the bed was just a mattress lying on the floor.) The staff was very unfriendly and seemed to be bored by serving in their restaurant and the new guests at the reception. We stayed there for 7 nights because there was no cheaper place available at that beach and they only cleaned our room when we asked for it. The ''garden'' around the bungalows is totally dried up. Compared to 3 years ago the beach has changed very much, due to the many boats it is really loud and in the afternoon the water gets dirty by seaweed.the hotels have considerably increased prices and you have to book way in advance. we were really sad and disappointed that this idyllic place has become a victim of mass tourism.

Average
Stayed here for 3nights in a 750baht fan room. Very basic, but large room. We stayed on the sunrise side so you really feel like your on the other side of the hill once you walk down the path. Stairs up the hill were definately annoying, spent most of the day time out so we walked up at night when it was cooler! Restaurant was nice but after reading the previous reviews I agree that there wasnt much service with a smile. Room wasnt cleaned once while we were there. Overall nice enough place but unless you really like views Im sure you could find somewhere better.

Mainly enjoyed our stay...
Reserved online and was picked up by boat at the pier by longtail for free (they charge when you leave!) but when we got to the resort they showed me a room in the middle of the resort, completely unshaded and near the noisy generator and not the sunrise side I had booked. I asked to be shown another and was told we could stay in a second row sunrise (as I thought I had booked) for one night then would have to move. Later that day I was told I had to move two bungalows down at 9am the next morning. Then at 8am the following day I was told we could stay where we were! I never quite found out what all that was about! The only other minor annoyance was ordering food. The food was quite good, reasonably priced and brought very quickly but ordering was as follows: someone who couldn't speak English came over and looked at us, one of us asked for something which the waiter wrote down and then wandered off before the other could order! Then a second waiter with a little English would come, but not enough to find out if we were to begin ordering from scratch or would get two identical orders. Finally, someone with more English would come and check our orders! As a couple of the staff spoke quite good English it seemed strange have those that couldn't taking orders. I thought the fan room was fine for 700B but I could hear the generator at night. The three aircon rooms that once would have had a great view, now have it partially blocked by the new rooms from the resort below. The view from the restaurant is also now partially blocked by a half built building that I guess will become a bar. It takes a good 35-45 minutes to puff your way over the headland to reach Ton Sai. Beware the cheap snorkling tours: after setting off we were told that we couldn't go on land at Phi Phi Leh or Bamboo island unless we paid 200B each, but not everyone on the boat wanted to pay so the boatman seemed prepared to sit in choppy seas off Bamboo island with an hour left of the trip until we demanded to go to a beach. Then we went to a beach only a 15 minute walk from the guesthouse!

Quite a butt and leg workout
Just stayed here recently. For 700B, got a spacious bungalow. The restaurant had amazing views during the day. Only non-positive thing I have is the location that it is the end of Long Beach and of course the stairs.

Agree w/Tezza
I found it a good deal at 400B for the sunrise side. First row was nice. Restaurant staff was good. Big difference from other reviewers experience. Probably better places at the 1000B huts, but the cheap ones are worth it.

Give this place a miss!!
I would not recommend Phi Phi Hill. Paid 1000B for a bungalow which was as basic as you can get, all wooden throughout and the bathroom was pretty grim. The shower was a joke, the water dripped on you! The beds were very old and tatty and the one fan was not adequate for two people and was incredibly loud so hard to sleep with it on. The other big problem with this resort is the steps up, there are lots of them (very tiring) and the stairs themselves are in an awful condition really rusty and rotten, it seriously needs replacing. In the interest of being fair, I've read a lot of reviews who complain of poor service and bad attitude from the staff at phi phi hill, I must say we had no problem and found the service very efficient and really friendly and the food was good and cheap! We then checked into Paradise Resort also on long beach wow what an improvement, cost just 1,100B per night but got a nice and much bigger concrete bungalow tiled floor throughout right next to the beach.

Looks like they lifted their game
I revisited PP Hill last week, by default on account hyper-inflation has hit just about every other bungalow place on Phi Phi. How about 1,200 for an outside toilet bungalow at Maphrao or a tent for 400B? 1,000 for nice but normal sized attached toilet bungalows at Poh's which were 500 last year. 500 for those old pokey outside toilet places jammed together up the back at Long Beach Bungalows (350 last year), 900 for a noisy upstairs room in town (500). Even Ao Toh Koh's cheapest bungalows were 500 against 300 before. Yet PP Hill still had their huge fan bungalows at 600-650, the small outside toilet ones at 400 (just big enough for a double bed, fan and two people's gear, but beats Maphrao's identically priced tents, plus awesome views) and the big aircon ones at last year's prices. What's more the restaurant prices were still the same bargains. Only one of the ten or so bungalows I stayed at this trip could match the Hill's green curry with rice at 85 or the big Changs at 70. Those views from the restaurant are still amazing. I paid particular attention to service in view of the comments by other reviewers below. Looks like the staff at the Hill have responded to the criticism, because it was particularly good in the restaurant. Lots of staff at peak times, menus were delivered quickly, orders taken promptly and the wait for food was not overlong, which was one criticism I had last visit. Only one time did they not have something I ordered, a pineapple juice. I also found the head girl pretty efficient. The manager guy is a bit taciturn at times, but all smiley at others. My bungalow didn't rock and roll, although it was starting to show signs of some wear and tear. There seemed to be a shortage of chairs for the big verandahs and I noticed the verandahs did not have an extended roof to sit and check the scene during one of the several rainstorms. The stairway was quite solid, but here I must comment: it is a pretty solid climb up from the beach and for the overweight or unfit could cloud their judgement about the whole place. I rate it an 8 on account of the bargain prices compared to inferior bungalows in the area, and the great views and value in the restaurant.

Worst service ever
We were charged 1,800B a night for three people for an air-con bungalow, once we entered the bungalow, we all noticed how the whole building shakes from the slightest movement -- it's almost like being at sea! To reach the guesthouse you need to take a longtail boat from Ton Sai Bay which is 80B and rises to 100B after 7pm. Then you have to endure over 100 steps up the hill, which is so unsafe and unstable that it should have been ripped down years ago -- you can see the rust on the railings and it looks like it will give way any day soon! Once you finally reach the summit , you are greeted by the rudest and most stupid people in Thailand. They just ignore you and when you order food, if they can't be bothered to make it they just pretend they have not got the ingredients -- but then 20 minutes later you see them eating it themselves. All day and night the 'staff' sit staring at the tv or gambling on the pc, which they charge you 3B a minute to use. The staff are so backwards that when we asked for simple things like '2 bottles of coke and one water' , they would bring '2 bottles of water and one coke'! We all got so annoyed by them we did not want to eat up there and see their faces. We nicknamed it "THE HILLS HAVE EYES" after that horror movie. I would never go back there -- and yes the views are amazing but this does not compensate for disastrous service. Stay well clear!

The service was terrible!
There are only two good reasons to stay in Phi Phi Hill - 1) quiet environment with a big hut, 2) nice scenery. There are ten-million reasons why staying at Phi Phi Hill can ruin your day - 1) the shower trickles, 2) no water between 3pm-4pm (wasn't even told by the staff), 3) bad service, 4) atrocious service, 5) lousy service, 6) shitty service...and so on. I'm sure you got my message. The staff there were extremely rude and I agree with the mimikim115 about the lady at the reception being extremely indifferent. There was one morning where I had to wait for more than an hour for my breakfast simply because they forgot about me. They seemed very angry as well and not at all apologetic. There is only one friendly staff, the man working downstairs in the open concept cafe. I dreaded to eat at the restaurant because seeing the staff made me cross. Also, the food was really mediocre. I stayed at the resort for 4 nights. The staff offered to clean the room but didn't so I had 5 days of disgusting sandy toilet and had to ask for more toilet paper. Even getting water from them was like a chore. Verdict: if you don't care about service, it's a great place to stay, very near the long beach except you've to pay 80B to get to the village (one-way). Otherwise, it's much better to find somewhere else.

hmm...
yes, this place has amazing views, esp from the restaurant. But that in no way compensates for the unfriendly and sometimes rude staff members (mainly female). four times during our meals, the waiter/waitress came back to say, "miss, we no have (mango, ice, pineapple, shrimp...)" the female receptionist which all the other male staff seems to be scared of is indifferent to customers at best. We were quoted 400B for a ghetto shack, 600B for fan/cold water room, 1,000B for fan/hot water room and 1,500B for air-con/hot water room. We were able to bargain the air-con room to 1,300B and fan room/hot water to 800B fortunately. I think I lost a few pounds walking up to this resort... but that was the least of the problems. Next time, I would not stay here. btw, the longtail boat ride from Ton Sai to long beach was 80B.
