What we say: 4 stars

Located on 26 acres of coconut groves, this top-end resort spans the isthmus and enjoys seafront on all three of Railay's beaches. It's the only option if you want direct access to Phra Nang beach from your resort, but keep in mind that you'll have to share any beach with the public. The resort has been spotlighted on "best hotels in the world" articles from publications like Conde Nast and Travel & Leisure. It's one of a handful of resorts in Thailand that offer true ‘lifestyles of the rich and famous' accommodation. The pavilions are gorgeous -- two story octagonal buildings that look like little lighthouses. Inside there's a living room on the first floor, done up in dark woods with an overall nature-oriented style, and a winding spiral staircase leading up to sumptuous sleeping digs on the second floor. Some come with private gardens, jacuzzis, and private pools, but all are surrounded in foliage and set a good distance from the nearest neighbour. A shared pool located next to a cliff at Railay West is stunning and gargantuan. The resort's eating and drinking options include a fine dining restaurant situated in the sandy part of a cave as it meets the beach. We can only begin to imagine what a spa treatment would be like at Rayavadee, but it's sure to be a treat. Rates go up by 15,000 baht or more during late December and early January. At any time, be sure to shop around for an internet rate.
