Narathiwat Hotel
Backpacker's gem

What we say:
This quaint little wooden hotel is built out over the Bang Nara River and is easily the best budget bet in Narathiwat -- some travellers refer to it as the best hotel in the entirety of Thailand. We're certainly a fan, with the pleasant common area decorated with handy maps and traveller's tips while simultaneously taking in a fresh sea-breeze. There's also a small veranda ideal for a refreshing drink while watching the fishing fleet head out to sea. Downstairs is a short-time place, but do not let that worry you as the locals know the difference between a Western backpacker and a Thai prostitute and the girls themselves certainly won’t bother you. There is also a small cafe on the ground floor. Recommended.

I agree!
I have been a regular visitor here since the late 80s. This is certainly one of my favourite hotels and there is never any problem from downstairs. Indeed I have often been invited to eat and drink with the girls when they have finished work (they only work until about 19.00 so it is very quiet at night). Only problem is that it shuts early so make sure you check before you go out!
