Takolaburi Cultural Resort

Northern Thai style villas with lots of extras

What we say: 3.5 stars

With its traditional northern Thai theme, Takolaburi is a refreshing break from the sprawling resorts of Khao Lak, so many of which seem like clones of one another. Set around lotus ponds and several fountains, the tastefully designed lobby could almost pass as a historic site in Chiang Rai (well, almost). Standard rooms in a three storey building don't have nearly the same charm, but they are spacious and comfortable with all the amenities you would expect at these prices, although the deep yellow floors are a little strange. The hardwood floored villas are a big step up, and these are constructed entirely of wood in the same manner as traditional northern Thai houses with high arching ceilings and round wood pillars. The priciest villas have walkways over huge en suite tubs with floating flower pedals. Although the resort occupies beach front, it's a short walk from most rooms. There is a massive swimming pool with pool bar along with a full spa, fitness centre, library, children's playground, and even a small Thai boxing ring in case your honeymooning takes a turn for the worst.
