Golden Beach Cha-Am Hotel

Poor value for money

What we say: 2.5 stars

The approach to this towering 20-story luxury hotel is a gauntlet of mostly-unoccupied shops--a testament, perhaps, to too-much, too-soon when it comes to development in the Cha-am market. Not surprisingly, the hotel has recently changed hands and pulled a new staff from another hotel--they speak English well and are eager to please. Inside you'll find a vertiginous, 17-story atrium with inner balconies encircled by rooms. Every room has private bath, air-con, TV with basic cable, fridge, and a balcony--but for the cheaper rooms, the balcony is miniscule and half-eaten up by the air-con unit. The brochure boasts a sea view from every room, but it's mostly a tree-view, obscuring a thin strip of blue somewhere in the distance. All the amenities are offered--room service, laundry and medical services, free-breakfast buffet. Sauna, whirlpool and a small exercise room are available, along with a disappointing pool out back. The one-and-two-bedroom suites are worth the dosh, but the Superior rooms and Junior Suites are poor value for the money. Lobby fills frequently with package-tour guides lecturing loudly to their charges in European tongues. Conference room and banquet facilities also available.
