The Cha-Am Methavalai Hotel

Long in the tooth, but with pool and beachfront

What we say: 4 stars

Once the premier luxury hotel on Cha-am beach proper, the Methavalai is looking a little long in the tooth now, but it does offer some good online rates (especially on weekdays). Set about half way between the road to the beach and the fishing village to the north, the sprawling lounge/reception area seems at once refined and hastily thrown together, as from the street you end up walking along the edge of the restaurant to get in. The hotel is designed in a series of progressively-recessed tiers meaning that rooms on all four floors have large sunny, private balconies with slightly-at-an-angle sea views. The hotel also offers massage, a sauna, small gym, a snooker and games room, business centre, internet in the lobby and comprehensive conference facilities. There are two imaginatively-designed, free-form pools with plenty of slides and nooks and crannies for the kids to play in, making this quite popular with families. Mums and Dads with dough would do well to head here to give the family a memorable vacation. The hotel also seems to have done a deal to keep the deckchair merchants at bay out front, which is another plus. Shop online for a discounted rate.
