Khao Wang Hotel
Comfortable but characterless

What we say:
Located very close to Khao Wang, this typical old Chinese-style hotel with hospital-like wide corridors has decently-sized rooms that come either fan-cooled or aircon. All rooms also have TV though only local channels, plus towels and soap, with large double beds and squat toilets in the basic bathrooms. It is comfortable enough but lacks character and isn't really suitable if you are keen to meet any other travellers. A nice park across the street is home to lots of seemingly well-behaved monkeys.

Don't know what horror would make you appreciate this place
Maybe it's changed in the two years since this place was last reviewed, but it was pretty awful this time around. The place had an ant problem (which, I discovered afterward, had moved to my backpack) and there were mosquitoes in the bathroom in the nasty standing water that's used to flush the squat toilet. Sheets were dirty, walls were dirty, the fan blew upwards (not effective for keeping mosquitoes off you) and the aircon didn't work. The prices were the same as listed above, so that was a relief. The people working weren't very welcoming until later in my stay, but then they were nice. It really is like a hospital, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if it was designed from similar blue prints. I stopped off at Rabieng to rent a motorbike and the place had a lot more personality, though I didn't see a room so I can't tell you what condition they were in. If I went back I wouldn't stay at Khao Wang, though to be honest I wouldn't go back to Phetburi. By the way, the map I got lists 6 hotels: Khao Wang & Rabieng & Jomklow hotels in the main part of town. Phet Kasem & Royal Diamond & Sun hotels on the other side of Phra Nakhon Khiri (all on Phetkasem Rd). I didn't look at any of those places, but it would have been smart to take a look.

Clean and well appreciated
After a hellish night at Rabieng Rim Num Guesthouse, this was a heaven. A clean bed and bathroom, I spent the day recovering from being sick from the foul atmosphere of the Rabieng. Although it was suspected that some of the staff might have been looking through the room while I was away, nothing was missing and my day and night here was pleasantly clean and comfortable. Do keep valuables on you when leaving for insurance purposes.
