Kata Country House

What we say: 4 stars

It's a brave move to slap a cowboy-themed resort on a tropical island, but this place appears to have pulled it off. From the outside the bungalows look like something out of a very old country and western film, but they reveal charming old-fashioned Thai style, wooden throughout and impeccably clean, sweet smelling interiors. The bathrooms are new and modern with buffered concrete walls and floors, plus a skylight. The rooms sit in much more attractive buildings and are very impressive with plenty of space, a massive comfortable bed on a concrete slab and wooden bathrooms. All deluxe rooms and bungalows have amenities such as LCD TVs, mini-fridge, air-con and a colourful beach bag containing items for an all-day stay at the beach. Set in a leafy garden away from the main road you feel a sense of intimacy and appreciation for the neatly-planted gardens that surround the bungalows, rooms and attractive pool. The rates include an American breakfast for two and WiFi is free in the bohemian-looking lobby. Overall, very good value for couples or families that don't mind being a short stroll from the beach.
