Ao Sane Bungalows
Budget beach shacks with charm

What we say:
Backpackers rejoice — budget accommodation does exist in this part of Phuket! Scattered along the entire length of rocky Ao Sane you'll find a dozen or so cheap beach bungalows. The bungalows are fan-cooled and you won't find any TVs or mini-bars here, but they are right on the beach and have balconies with seaviews that could compete with the highest-priced of resorts. Some of the older bungalows are looking rundown and have cruddy bathrooms, but the newer wood-panelled bungalows are more solid and even have a hot shower. The staff are usually too busy going about their own business to bother much with selling rooms, so ask for the keys and check out a few before settling in. You're pretty isolated here — but that's part of the charm. There's a restaurant on premises doing cheap Thai food, and snorkels can be rented for 150B. Some of the best snorkelling Phuket has to offer sits just in front of this resort on the left hand side.

simple but elegant
I just stayed at the Ao Sane Beach Bungalows for a second time... and I look forward to the next time I can go. The food was excellent, and the snorkeling was amazing. The rooms are rustic and basic, but if you go expecting that you will enjoy your stay. Many of the guests staying there were staying for a month or more. There is a real sense of community among the guests, but you can be a private as you want. They gave me their business card with their email address: aosane_chai@yahoo.com and the mobile number for making reservations: +66-813-261-687. I think pretty much every room has a different price. We went during high season and got one room for 500 THB and the other for 650 THB per night (both non-deluxe). For snorkeling at Ao Sane beach, is it best to get into the water on the west end of the beach near the car park. On that end you can easily walk out into the water on sand for a ways and then snorkel. In the middle of the beach there is a lot of coral not very far out in the water. Watch out when the tide is going out... I cut my foot on some coral because the water kept getting lower in the middle. I have been snorkeling in Bali, Mexico, Philippines, and Thailand, and this beach is probably the best snorkeling I have ever seen. Lots of different kinds of fish, starfish, and many different kinds of coral. I hope you enjoy this place as much as I did.
