Before the tsunami, we considered this place the best budget hideaway on the whole of Phuket Island, and despite the damage they caught, we're glad to report that this is still the case. Much was rebuilt with the help of volunteers after the tsunami, and there's currently four bungalows plus camping facilities. They plan to build some more, at some point, further away from the water -- the campground was unaffected. The staff here are really friendly and the place has a true backpacker vibe. Call ahead to reserve a bungalow and get a ride in from the main road or the airport if you need one. Recommended as a budget hideaway. Mai Khao Beach Bungalows is closed in low season.

Fantastic Friendly Basic Unspoilt Beach & Bungalows - 2nd November, 2008
I have stayed @ Mai Khao Beach Bungalows many times over the last 5 years (both before and after sunami). This accomodation is clean, friendly (beautiful family) and away from the busy streets of Phuket town. Not to mention the food! Wow! I would like to add this family has only 4 bungalows (though they do sometimes allow camping on land) and is not associated with the newer bungalows that have recently opened next door. Please note the link to the site above is not for this accomodation... Mai Khao Beach Bungalows are listed in the rough guide with correct contact details and I urge you to take the extra time to look up the correct accomodation as you wont regret it.
