Description
At the other end of the spectrum, the JW Marriott is a five-star resort oozing class and pretension. The rooms are elegant with Jim Thompson silks, landscaped private terraces, and indoor salas so you can be massaged in the privacy of your own room. Paths and footbridges wind through the extensive grounds over ponds of waterlilies and koi, past the tennis courts and health spa, and alongside the three swimming pools with elephant fountains. An infinity pool behind reception is the site a daily firelighting ceremony. It starts around sunset, so order a cocktail from the lobby bar and enjoy the show -- you're paying for it. The resort has enough boutiques to fill a small suburban mall and ten different bars and restaurants (gourmet Italian, Japanese, American steakhouse, European deli, Thai ). You won't hurt from a lack of choice when it comes to shopping or dining, but your wallet will definitely suffer. Perhaps out of guilt for being the only significant blight in the area, the JW Marriott funds a sea turtle conservation program on Mai Khao beach. This is exactly the kind of resort that people with a big budget are looking for, but be sure to shop around for a realistic internet rate.

Stayed here for free on Marriott points accumulated from business travel. We were more accustomed to budget - midrange places. We were spoiled rotten here. The beach was long, steep, and completely deserted. Each of the 3 pools overlook the ocean. The service was impeccable and the breakfast buffet was heavenly.
I'd have a different perspective if I shelled out the 8000 baht for a night, but if there's a resort worth the money, this might be it!
If arriving from public tranport, the Marriott is at the N. end of Mai Khao beach (you'll see a sign from either direction). Then it's a 10 minute walk W to the hotel.
As could be expected, the food is very pricey. Even in the on-site minimart, you'll pay 70 baht for a piece of fruit. The problem is that there's nowhere around to buy snack for less money. Do yourself a favor and buy some pringles, ramen, fruit, and water along the way.
