Suanluang Resort
One of the more popular places to stay

What we say:
One of the off-the-beach resorts, this friendly and efficiently run enterprise has comfortable, spotlessly clean bungalows in a garden setting and a good Thai-French restaurant. The bungalows are made of wood and well ventilated with high ceilings, a nice front porch, and a certain je ne sais quoi -- though the air-con rooms feel a little claustrophic. The owners, a Franco-Thai couple, can organise day trips to the border, waterfalls and caving expeditions for a reasonable price -- food and drinks usually included. From February to June overnight camping or day snorkelling trips to Ko Thalu are also on offer. It's one of the more popular places to stay, and the staff will make you feel right at home. The restaurant is open from 07:00 to 22:00, and worth a visit even if you're not staying here.

Nice Room, Poor Service, Bad Location
I tried going to Suan Luang's website and got a message saying ''access denied''. Weird. Then I sent an e-mail to their Yahoo address. No reply. Then I sent a reservation request via Facebook. No reply. Maybe I should have taken the hint, but we went there anyway. We inspected fan and air-con rooms. Both were attractive. We took the air-con at 680 baht (fan was 480). Our bungalow was solid, tidy, attractive. Then we went to the restaurant to have lunch. An older Thai gentleman with almost no English brought us menus. When we were ready to order we waved to him. Flustered, he asked us to wait. Fifteen minutes later we looked around for help. Nobody there. We asked the old man what was up. He pulled out a phone, made a call, and said, we should wait 20 minutes. We waited 30. Then we made to leave. The old man pulled the phone out, made another call, and asked us to wait 3 minutes. We waited 10. Still nobody there, so we left and walked to the beach to find lunch. This was no small inconvenience since the beach is more than 1 km away -- they claim it's 500 meters, but that's nonsense. When dinnertime came we went down to inquire if there was food in the restaurant. They finally admitted the it was closed. We got two different excuses for this closure from two different employees. We felt deceived. The well reviewed restaurant was one reason we went there. But they posted no notice that the restaurant was not in operation. We had to drag this information out of them. We walked down to the beach again for dinner and back in the dark. The next day we checked out and went to a cheap, plesant bungalow operation on the beach (Lola's). As we checked out, a younger Thai woman -- one of the owners? -- said to me, ''My mother told me you had a Chang Beer yesterday''. Yes, I said. I had two. And did she also tell you I paid her for both of them? If you've got your own transport and the restaurant was open this might be an okay place. But we felt deceived, abused and ripped off. Oh, by the way, they have a pack of not very friendly dogs.

Another stay
We stayed here around 5 years ago, so thought we'd revisit on the trip down the coast. They even remembered us! (well, me, anyway). The fan room was comfortable with hot water and fan. Bed nice and hard. They have changed the way the fan cooled rooms open - you now enter from an extended verandah at the front facing the path (you used to face the ''jungle''). The restaurant is still worth going to and didn't seem as ''expensive'' as 5 years ago - whether this was our perception or whether other places have increased their prices is the question. A nice revisit.

Agree
With everything. These rates are up 100 bt since I was there; the fan rooms are old but have hot water, are serviced each day and are great value. A fair way from the beach. The restaurant is well worth the extra money in ambience and food.
