Kiwi Orchid Guest House
Who said bus stations were boring?

What we say:
The Kiwi Orchid's name seems to suggest it's in a picturesque, tropical environment, but actually it sits right behind the Ranong bus station. The place has something of a youth hostel vibe with a basic restaurant that's good for chatting with other travellers, an internet café, and an on-site travel company that helps with island trips and motrbike rentals. Fan rooms are very basic and on the grimy side but beds are soft and comfy. The two shared bathrooms are dirty with broken shelves and more than a few spiders. Overall the Kiwi's atmosphere is a little gloomy, and the whole place has a thrown together kind of feel to it, so don't expect any tasteful décor or fine furnishings. Although its atmosphere leaves something to be desired, the Kiwi is still a solid choice for the true old school budget traveller or anyone who is dead tired after their bus ride and simply needs a bed.

Basic, but great host and very good vegetarian food
Basic rooms with fan, shared bath room. Good place to stop for transiting to islands or border run. Rooms B250-300, free wifi that works in rooms, very good food. Jai, the warm host, has very good English and goes the extra mile for visitors when needed. Now painted orange. Tickets for boat ride to islands organised, B100 to the pier.

Please Avoid
This place will only appeal to those looking to meet and chat with travellers who enjoy drinking and smoking the night away. The rooms cost THB250 and are not en-suite. The overall place has an air of neglect and disrepair. The restaurant charges ridiculous prices for water and beer which don’t match the quality of the establishment. There are cleaner and friendlier guesthouses in the centre of town (approximately 2km). The owners lack charm and chase every possible bath. They were not too happy to supply free information regarding the visa-run trip to Myanmar.

Loved it here
Everyone is friendly and the atmosphere here is pleasant and enjoyable for relaxation eating good food and drinking beer during the rains. I enjoyed my stay here and hope to see everyone at the Kiwi Orchid again in October, it's a wonderful place to stay.

Okay if no where else to stay
Could do with a coat of paint on the outside, upstairs lounge area a little threadbare. Room I stayed in had a lot of ants. Good tourist info service though. Good food.
