Mr J.'s
Comfortable and quirky

What we say:
Mr J. is quite a character, offering his guests free homemade condoms -- guaranteed for 20 years, by the way. In addition to contraception, he offers Western Union transfers, safety boxes (10B/day) and a shop with books, souvenirs, snacks and a frightening selection of fireworks. Mr J.'s rooms come in a variety of sizes and prices to accommodate most budgets. The clean rooms are all packed into two brightly-coloured buildings lining a hillside stairway. Each room has a small patio area but the only view you'll have is of the other building and its occupants. Located between Mae Haad and Sairee Beach, Mr J's guests enjoy a break from the high-traffic areas while benefiting from their close proximity. The beach is just a few minutes' away by foot, but it requires a walk down the hill through a trash-littered coconut grove and the final resting place of several old boats.

Fine unless you have your hearth set on a Wooden Hut
Stayed here for a week at THB300 per night, two people. The room was brick, cold water, European toilet, fan and TV. The bed and pillows were covered in hard plastic which didn't annoy us, but might some. If you Google you will find that Mr J previously had problems with bed bugs, hence the plastic covering. The fan was more than enough at night, air-con not needed. The first night we stayed at Sairee Cottages which others may find more appealing if you're looking for a wooden hut/bungalow and don't mind luke-warm service from a receptionist who believes Europeans are not deserving of full respect. I witnessed a group of Thai students check-in and her politeness lever was a multiple of five compared to non Thai check-ins. We moved to Mr J because the huts were just too hot and not the best bathroom for cleaning our snorkelling gear. A word of warning if you are new to South East Asia, Mr J isn't your new best friend. I'm not saying avoid him, just common sense when dealing with someone who appears so nice. If you’re going to rent a motorbike, chose manual over automatic and please be careful on the very, very bad dirt roads on the Islands. They are not suitable to automatics, yet 95% of the bikes being rented are automatics. The islanders have a good cartel in operation, even 7/11 charges extra for their products, eg Singha water 1.25l (THB20 v THB14), coke can (THB20 v THB14), Leo Beer big (THB59 v THB47). If you're naive enough to believe it's because of the boat or expensive electricity, maybe ask yourself why the minimarts and family run shops which on mainland Thailand would operate with no air-con, yet on the island with expensive electricity they run their aircon at max!!!
