Two Rocks Bungalows
Friendly and very laid-back

What we say:
Two Rocks is one of the most laid-back setups on Ban Tai beach. The wooden bungalows here are positioned around a sandy palm grove just off the beach. Only one bungalow actually sits on the beach, but the rest are not far away. The cheapest fan huts here are very worn, but are passable and popular among backpackers. A more comfortable choice are the newer, larger fan rooms that are in much better shape but are built into a single building. Some comfortable air-con rooms with hot water sit toward the beck of the property.

Could be lovely
Stayed here for three days earlier this week and have since moved to Mac Bay. The reputation for being laid-back is certainly well earned; they already knew who I was when I arrived - I was the only one to arrive that day! I was taken to my bungalow and, unlike other resorts where you're rushed into check-in straight away while you're still sweating buckets and laden down with luggage, the friendly guy told me to take my time before coming over to check in - so I did, in fact I had a shower first! Check in was a little creepy, in that I became one of only 4 guests on site and was the first person to sign the check-in book in 6 days!! The site is very peaceful, and though the beach isn't great you do have it completely to yourself - irritatingly most pleasant on the day I checked out, when the weather was gorgeous and the views just stunning. But the place unfortunately also has a rather neglected feel to it - the cheapest (300B - though they also have better bungalows for 500B and 800B) bungalows, which was what I stayed in, are very worn, and the whole complex was looking very sorry for itself, piles of half-burned rubbish around and a smashed-up boat washed up in a recent storm sitting just outside my room. I probably come in as the 'grittier' sort of backpacker of yesteryear that guide books reminisce about, in that I have absolutely no problem with basic lodgings with no air-con or hot water; but I did find this bungalow a little too dilapidated. That said, had the rest of the site been looked after a little more nicely - and it would only have taken a few small touches and a bit of a clean-up to achieve that - then I would have been perfectly happy here. The low key atmosphere was lovely, and the staff really friendly, but it just all felt a bit unloved. The place seems to liven up a little when there are a few more people around, though - the beach-side bar was open one night, before being promptly closed by torrential downpours! My favourite (!) bits were the tiny mirror in the room (looked like they had bought one big mirror and smashed it into multiple pieces, one for each room!), the state-of-the-art, hole-in-the-wall drainage system, and the owner's reassurance when I asked about a safety box for valuables (they don't have one) - he told me they hadn't had anything stolen for 5 years, but proceeded to tell me that 9 years ago all manner of stuff got nicked! Great - the flimsy padlock just adds to the feeling of security!! :) All in all, you could do worse than this place, and if you're after a low-key atmosphere you'll certainly get that much, but I wish they would make the tiniest effort because this could be a really really lovely spot if they wanted it to be.
