Situated in the east of Mae Nam, across the river from the five-star Zazen Resort, Chalee Villa Resort is hard to find from the road, but easily spotted from the beach.
In saying that, the place seems permanently full of backpackers who can't believe their luck in finding these rustic bungalows. Villa is a bit of an overstatement to describe what's on offer; the clean, wood and brick, fan-cooled bungalows are simple, with nothing more than a small bathroom and a bed, while the covered verandahs out front have seating and hammocks. The bungalows are set under enormous trees, accessorised with swings and hammocks for lazy cum weary travellers, amid a local fishing village. Backpackers and fishermen mingle under the trees on the beach while sharing local beers and travel tales. A sala offers one of the cheapest massages to be found on Samui, at only 200 baht an hour and the restaurant serves value for money Thai and Western food. Chalee Villa Resort is ideal for budget travellers wanting a postcard perfect view as well as a taste of local life. To find Chalee, heading towards Nathon, just past Zazen on your right side, is a sign for W Retreat, take this turning about 1km down the road, take a right turning, and follow the road towards the beach, avoiding the left turning to W Retreat. Recommended.
