Ko Tao Tropicana Resort
Nice rooms and easy on the budget

What we say:
Bordering the beach, Koh Tao Tropicana offers lovely rooms spread around well-manicured garden grounds. Travellers can soak up the serene atmosphere away from the heat of the sunny beach on the various chairs and hammocks dotted throughout the cool, shady garden, or have a massage (200-250B) in the garden sala. An on-site travel agency, book exchange and internet cafe are also available, and Tropicana's laid-back restaurant features a large menu with decent prices as well as a guitar for guest use. Most rooms are either duplex-style bungalows or located in a building, with a few private huts, but they are bright and clean with comfortable beds and private patios. Tropicana Resort is a beautiful spot with plenty of great service and comfort at a reasonable price.

Slice of paradise
When I arrived on Koh Tao I was a bit taken aback by the prices of the guesthouses, particularly in Sairee Beach. We bailed from Sairee after one night in a roach motel and moved to Chalok and found the Tropicana. Paid a reasonable 500 Baht per night for a fan room. It was located by itself on the 3rd floor of a building next to the restaurant. This time of year it gets quite breezy so no AC was quite liveable. As we were just behind Carabao Dive Resort, with a mostly unobstructed view of the ocean and on the 3rd floor we got a great cross breeze almost constantly. It was a little bare bones in that it was fan and no hot water, also no tv which some people might like. But it was really lovely and I ended up staying here for nearly two weeks. The staff were friendly and the woman at the front desk seemed very knowledgeable about tours and transportation. The restaurant service was quick and pretty decent, but there are a few really great places to eat around Chalok, particularly in the west end of the bay. Don't miss Cappuccino (french cafe) in town if you're looking for a little Western style food. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody going to Koh Tao. It's a great base to explore Chalok Baan Kao from and go diving. Do yourself a favour and skip Sairee Beach.

Bed bugs
I stayed in this hotel for one sleepless night because I ended up hiding in the bathroom from all of the bed bugs that were crawling out of the carved wooden moldings nailed to the wall above the bed. After informing staff of the problem first thing in the morning, they didn't even seem surprised and reluctantly moved me to another room - their newest room to be exact. After no sleep the night before, I took a quick shower in my new room and laid down to take a nap. I then decided I should look around before I close my eyes and immediately found 2 bed bugs under the pillow and on the end of the mattress that was against the wall. I quickly moved to a new hotel and after a long argument with the manager at Tropicana, I still had to pay for 2 nights even though I only stayed one and didn't get any sleep! What a rip off! (Not to mention that I had to spend a lot of money to get EVERYTHING I was traveling with washed.) Oh and I also talked to a person I met that was also staying at the Tropicana and she woke up the next day with 40 bed bug bites all over her arms - and again, the staff did nothing about it.

Really nice place!
We had a fan room for 400 baht, but flaked out in the heat and got air con for 1000 baht, which involved just being given the remote control for the unit! 600 baht extra just for air con is a bit of a rip, but they all do it out here. Other than that this was a nice place to stay, the room was clean, although the shower was cold water. The staff were very helpful and the resort is right on the beach. Beware the sea is very shallow and not great for swimming. Seriously the best place in Chalok to stay, we looked at other places but they were dumps or too pricey. A nice late night bar is the On the Rock Bar, a 5 minute walk up the road from Tropicana, just come out the main entrance and turn right and you'll see it up a steep drive to your left, opposite Big Fish Restaurant.
